Hello to all , I have developed a new problem with the discovery 3 , when mainly accelerating and usually when warmed up a little a vibration comes into the front underneath , it's so bad sometimes the dashboard shakes , its hard to say if it's underneath my seat or more passenger front or central , is this most likely the driveshaft or could it be a shaft to the passenger side front wheel etc , I know it's impossible to say for sure but she's a big old bus and diagnosing something loose could be a real pain , so any help or advice appreciated, thanks

Google Discovery 3 torque converter vibrations
Quiet expensive to replace as its gearbox out, easy/cheap way is to get some Drtranny, stick it in the box and see if it improves, you will need two tubes.

Hi thanks for speedy replies , it's fine for first few miles but can just start knocking on acceleration , it seems like a shaft , could I remove the front prop and drive and see if that cures it to narrow it down ? I'm definatly going buy Dr tranny and check the wheels for tightness , I'm not amazing at 4wd and first thing to buy is paracetamol I think

Knocking does not sound like a torque converter issue.
You cannot drive these on one prop like LRs of old.
I assumed it was an auto?

Left frojnt shaft is first failure point as cv boot splits and people ignore it, followed by main rear prop, the very rear u/j partially seizes, and the rear main prop centre bearing rubber splits up as they are real thin., if its just the rubber it can be fixed with PU selaant.

Thankyou il have a look at left front shaft first , would there be much play if it's bad or is it more a visual looking shagged kind of thing if boot looks intact

Hi well I think I've found two culprits for noises and vibration , up front I have a significant weep from the diff all along the bottom , and to the rear drivers side the wheel on back has a little play left to right / but not top to bottom and makes a clank noise when rotated where the shaft meets rear diff , going to refill front until I get Dr tranny ( hope it works ) and thinking new bearing and replace shaft on drivers rear, and to top it off I have the handbrake to fix

Drtranny is only for auto gearboxes
Double check thats actually diff oil as I have had the pas banjo bolt come slack and weep in that exact area.
The diff oil is not fill to spill, it is a measured amount 0.65 litre I think? but to get you out of toruble it certainly wont hurt in the short term to fill it to the brim, the level plug is on laft side of the diff and is an allen key

OK thanks for that I thought maybe you could pour in there to tidy the weeping up. So what's the options just replace ? Also would you have any thoughts on why the rear shaft sounds like its tapping steel where it meets the middle housing , almost like there's a stone stuck noise but there isn't

Old day bodge is a little brake fluid in the oil to swell the seals.
Do you mean the rear main prop ie the long one?

The bodge sounds good and shall be tried!!!! the other problem is, well one of the other problems is , rear wheel drivers side , slight movement when pulling tyre , but real annoyance is it's driveshaft/ propshaft has a metallic clicking noise where it joins rear differential when wheel is turning , v annoying
