Got injector pump out today. As I need to sort thermostat as well, I drained coolant & remove the various hoses at the front of the engine.

Cleaned the pump exterior of the years of oil, dirt & grime, and then took the regulator off. Both rubber & plastic o-ring not looking their best. Wondering what impact these have on the fuel regulation ?

Should there be an o-ring in the slot next to the regulator body ?

Pump seals will also be done this week.

Update: The other day, I replaced all the injection pump & regulator seals. New fuel rail sensor as well. Re-sealed the power steering pump & cleaned up loads of oily gunk all over the pulley's, aux belt, etc. Replaced thermostat. Exhaust still really smokey, but at least engine gets up to temperature now.

Today I tried each injector into a jar with electrical plug disconnected. Number 4 leaking badly under cranking pressure, so swapped in a spare. Exhaust still smoking badly, but it does seem to run smoother.

Wondering if the re-conditioned turbo seal is failing on the exhaust side of the turbine ? It's about 3-4 years old. No signs of oil coming up towards the intercooler though. MAP goes from about 100kpa up to 130-140kpa when I rev it hard.

Also with the inlet manifold off, there's lots of grey smoke coming from the EGR feed. As this is taken from the exhaust manifold (before the turbo), it still seems to me like an overfueling issue ?? Could this simply be tired injectors putting too much fuel into the engine ?

Opinions welcome . . . . .

Pete

Strange Update . . . . . so the car has been parked for 2-3 days with no work done. On startup the engine was lumpy & pushed out quite a bit of smoky, but after 5mins that cleared. We did this video while revving the engine.

Tried again 2 hours later after dinner, and same again. Lumpy idle & lots of smoke on startup, and then it seems to clear.

Baffled is me.

Sounds like one or more injectors are dropping fuel (leaking) when engine off over time and causing overfuelling when started up.

Is that video after the smoke has cleared?

Mine does the same thing, but much more grey smoke, and lumpy for a few minutes.
I cleared out the inlet manifold last summer and it cleared it.
It was good since, until it started warming up and now it is doing it again now, but not for as long.
Doesnt have to sit overnight, just a couple of hours will do it
I was wondering if it was to do with glowplugs - Should they come on in summer even if the light on dash doesnt indicate you should wait to turn key like in winter?
Praps they should come on in any weather on starting as engine is turned over by starter motor and so glow plug or two not working can do this? It's my latest theory to try and explain my puffing.
Mine always starts but winters arent really cold here near Lisbon
Its 37 C at the moment, but it still puffs and stumbles a bit in the morning when its a bit cooler
Sorry for absolutely no help post - but if you find out what it is I'd be very happy to hear :)

Yes that video was after it cleared. Still need to repeat my 5 mile round-trip drive & see if the fuel economy has improved since the previous test. Car isn't insured at the moment, so need to do a 1-day insure to road test it.

Interesting thought. Perhaps I could take them out & attach an airline to see if there's any bubbles at the tips, which might indicate a weep.

Saying that, none of the them showed any leakage on my jar test above & that was with the fuel pipe at cranking pressure.

Agreed. Maybe they could be weeping as they cool down.

If the smoke stays away when warmed up, MOT should be ok, but gotta do the rear brake lines first.
