hi,

anyway of adjusting the backlash from me landy's diff's. getting a clonk when changing gear, have checked spicers in props and they are ok. the diff flanges turn a good 1/8 - 1/4 turn.

thx in advance

yu sure the backlash is in the diff - and not at the outboard end of the driveshafts? check them before you strip the diff - yu gorra take em out anyway.

i can check the driveshaft ends and see if they are worn. can the pinions in the diff be shimmed to take back lash out if thats where the problem is tho ?

rebuilding a diff is not an easy job - it involves pre-loads, dial indicators and all sorts of techy stuff that is not for the faint hearted. It is easier - just to change it for one off fleabay.

My old 110 had over half a turn of free play on the rear diff - made geart changing a bit of an art to remove the thud from each change. I never looked at fixing it, i got used to it, but i was told it is quite a big job as daft says.

You can adjust them tho without all that stuff, done it many times on trucks, in actual fact fitted bearings and such as well.

The pinion at the front usually has a colapsable spacer, or shimms but normally you dont need to touch that.

Some have cages that can be adjusted to take the play out, and some have to be shimmed up. If you coat the crown wheel with grease you can see where it is running, ie in the centre of the gear, up, down, forward or back. If you set it too tight it will whine, but it's staight forward to take play out by moving the crown closer to the pinion, just dont be greedy, leave it with backlash.

I've seen them all pitted to fook and damaged by bits of bearings that have broken up, but new bearings and they run for years again.

how da'ya know its the diff?
loads of stuff can give backlash in a drive train , or a little of everything.
