Well, car back to the garage this morning due to LP pump leaking and I suspect the HP pump too. Patches of diesel on my drive by the offside rear wheel (very obvious it's the LP pump as the housing is soaking with diesel) and more concerning is the patch of diesel by the front offside wheel, reading up looks like it's the HP pump.

Now I'm gonna get slated for this but they gave me an N reg Defender van. This thing looks the business with Sawtooth alloys huge MT tyres and has been lifted etc, my lad thinks it's a monster truck and loves it! But my god what a crap thing to drive, noisy, slow, thirsty, uncomfortable and so on. I know people love them and it does look the business but how do you live with one day to day?

I was thinking of getting one next year, are the later models any better?

It would be unusual to have both pumps leaking at the same time - not impossible - but unlikely..
Check the connections at the HP pump and pipework around it. - also the HP rail and connections.
Best thing is to thoroughly clean the whole area with gunk / jizer or similar. then run the unit and inspect for any sign of leakage as it is nigh on impossible to tell otherwise.
Might as well do the whole engine bay at the same time. You can then see any form of leak starting easily. A small mirror on a telescopic arm is useful for partially hidden areas after thorough cleaning.

oh, as for the duff fender.... they are all like that :) - it is just an uncomfortable expensive tractor in a box.:p

Thanks Joe, the garage I bought it from are dealing with it. I think the previous owner was a bit of a bodger, the LP fuel pump housing was held on with cable ties. I questioned where they got the car from and they said it was a PX, the guy said he was an enthusiast and had done XYZ to it, since I bought it it's been in the garage more than I have driven it. So I wouldn't be surprised if they have both gone at the same time. Up to yet it has had every major fault that an FL1 can give you. To be fair they are dealing with it but I can tell they are as fed up as me.

Has it got a fuel burning heater? Isn't that on a front corner under the bumper somewhere?

know it's abit off track, but saw another hippo a 2002 td4 and was amazed to see the fuel pump and filter in the engine bay , tucked down by fuse box

mines a 2002 td4 on a 52 plate and fitted under the back wheel arch

always thought that after 2002 all were fitted in the back arch ,

wondered mines a 3 door and the other was a 5 door, didn't expect it to be there

It was the LP pump leaking from the housing so it has been replaced. The garage had it on a clean bit of concrete overnight and couldn't find any diesel leaking from the front and the HP fuel pump was dry. My drive is on a slight slope so the fuel must have been pooling by the front wheel.

Hopefully this is it for a while!

Just picked car up. It was the plastic connection at the top of the pump that had cracked, Bosch pump that looked quite new. Guys replaced it with a new Bosch pump and not a cheapo one thank God.

I think the fuel pump arrangement changed over sometime mid-2002 - the VIN model year is a better guide to these things and doesn't necessarily change on January 1st.

just took me back as i didn't realise they had done that

i think mine being a 52 is the first 6 x months and 02 is the latter,

funny i looked on the vin and was 2A

still, good to learn something new

Odd... RAVE says the changeover is from 03MY onwards, which suggests 2A's had the old setup, and 3A's the new. Maybe someone back-converted theirs cos they were fed up with spending an hour changing the fuel filter?!

that's what threw me, mines a 2a as well and agree maybe someone did indeed convert it

mine hasn't got a fbh, cause at first i thought it was for that

think it's a good idea to move it, a lot easier to get to

Well, spoke to soon...Mrs rang me at work to say she thinks my car is leaking oil as there was a big patch on the drive. Had a look underneath and sure enough diesel leaking at an alarming rate. So back to dealer again, they are gonna take the pump off and take it to Bosch specialists to check over and overhaul. Fair play they didn't want to just replace the seals in case something else was up.

I wonder if the LP pump was on it's way out and the new pump has seen of the HP pump? Only explanation I can come up with.

On the up side, I'm getting a 1.5" lift and some Modulars with BF Goodrich K02s fitted soon.

...or just a coincidence. Or maybe someone put in some petrol, realised their mistake and topped off with diesel and didn't tell anyone ;)

It's a possibility I suppose, however it certainly wasn't me if that's what your suggesting. In the month I've owned I have used it 8 times o_O It's been at the garage I bought it from being fixed the other days. Filled it up once to the brim so unless it was a full tank of petrol I put in I can't see how this would have happened.

I'm going with coincidence although the lads in the garage think it's odd for the 2 pumps to go at the same time.

They are sending it to a Bosch specialist today for a check and overhaul, see what comes back.
