Hi

Has anyone ever fitted a baby seat in the middle seat on a defender? have you got any pictures? do you think its safe? can you recommend a seat?

Cheers

Never tried as it's only a lap belt so put mine in the passenger seat and squeeze the Mrs onto the middle one. You would need to fit a 3 point seat belt that I assume would need fixing into the roof support.

I removed the seat and bolted the baby seat with 4 coach bolts and a spreader plate through the bulkhead..... meant it had to stay in the Landy but did the trick

Cheers Steve

We do take the baby out in the landy now and then, but the baby seat goes on the passenger seat and the missus in the middle.

The instructions for the baby seat said it needs a three point seat belt. Obviously the middle seat has only a lap belt. I'm sure you could secure it better, by bolting down an easyfix base in the middle, but you still fall fail of the gear stick problem.

Our baby is still too small for a forward facing car seat. I did try the baby seat in the middle, but couldn't use 2nd, 4th or reverse because the stick hits the baby seat.

Wheying it up at the time, we decided it was safest to have the baby seat properly mounted on the passenger seat and the missus in the middle.

yes i see where you are coming from, we considered putting another seat in the back so the wife could sit there, this in theory would still make it a 3 seater defender!!

thought you had to have a 3 point belt fitted for ANYONE to use the middle seat

No, they were fitted with just a lap belt.

Although I have been looking at the three point belts that exmoor do for the centre seat. They don't have a shoulder point exactly (so probably not good enough for a baby seat) but do have a shoulder strap that just comes over the back of the seat.

I did also look at the forward facing rear seats that exmoor do. The original one, they told me wasn't safe for a child to use at all, and the new one that is child seat ready is really expensive. So considering that the three of use can fit in as we are now, Ive kinda gone off the idea.

exmoor trim do there locking seat for the rear loadspace which comes with a 3 point belt and is suitable for baby and booster seats. A centre seat is not intendeed for a baby seat and ther is no way that a 3 point belt will come at the correct place to properly secure it. Baby seat in the front passanger and the mrs in the back or buy another car to take them out in and keep the landy for yourself thats what i did.Right enough when the wee man was in a baby seat i had a 110csw which he was in the front of and the mrs in the back, when he went on to booster seats he went into the 2 nd row seats after they were replaced with exmoor trim high back seats

I thought about fitting a baby seat in the middle and then considered how often my nipper would be kicking the hi/lo difflock lever and gear stick whilst i was driving so i ditched the idea.
