Avon tyre profile?

Im thinking about that tyres to put on the 110 rims when it’s finished.
At the moment it had Avon rangemasters, marked up with 112/110N 7.50-R16
What does the 7.50 mean in relation to a modern tyre? I can get the Avons but if something like the BFGs are better then why not.
At the moment the 7.50-R16 is confusing me as I don’t know what to compare it with.

7.50 16 is just the old imperial measure. 235/85/R16 is nearest
Most 7.50's will be cross ply The 235 will be radial.

It’s not really the “old” measure.

You can still buy 7.50 tyres. And it means the same thing today as it did 50 years ago!

Can you explain the 7.50 to me 300 especially how to convert it to the more common format?

7.50 = 7 1/2” wide, whereas a 235 is 235mm/9.4” wide

Your 7.50 tyre will probably be on a 5.5” wide rim with an offset that places the wheel well inside the arch. 235’s need a 6” min width to be safe - with an offset to allow for the extra tyre width. Have a look here as a visual comparison will help

Go for Avon range masters. Good outer edge for a bit of mud traction but nice on road. Tube type

A 7.50 x 16 is a 16” rim and has a 7.50” section width (tread) and a 7.50” sidewall. Giving a total height/diameter of 31”

In practice an aggressive MT might be a 1/2” taller and some remoulds come in very short at only 29” tall.

A 7.50 is a relatively narrow and tall tyre and generally works well off road in the U.K.

There is no “modern” direct equivalent. A 235/85R16 is probably closest. About the same height, but quite a bit wider.

Anything else that is of comparable width will be much shorter such as a 205 x 16 (205/80R16).

Plenty of radials too. BFG and others sell 7.50’s.

The Avon Rangemaster is such a classic tyre



@congo181 , if you decide to go with the wider 235/85R16 I can really recommend the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro, many LZ members are using these too. A 235 will have a recommended minimum rim width of 6j so a 5.5j is too narrow.

Sure the tyre will 'fit'. But you will be beyond manufacture ratings. It's unlikely, but could cause an issue with insurance if you were in an RTI.

Haha I probably don’t to be honest. it’s almost totally original at the moment and the intention is to keep it that way. There can’t be many about that still have the AM radio

I don't know if you can currently get coopers. I was looking over the summer and was told that they had become part of the "America first" style of trading we are seeing across the pond instigated from the trump era and export stocks are limited. I notice you link is "on backorder". I am not questioning whether they are a good tyre just their current availability in the UK.
