My OH has a 1998 P38 2.5DSE developed which developed a small ATF leak and despite telling her to keep an eye on the level (which I have managed to do for five years) she ran it dry. On topping it back up it seems to have damaged somthing! Still drives still changes all gears correctly however car is even slower than it was before which for a P38 2.5 is almost undriveable especialy when she tows a horse box a lot. Any suggestions as to what she damaged within the auto box?:doh:

If it ran dry I would consider looking at the Torque convertor - as this shares the same fluid as the 'Box.....
Also it might help to ensure all the relevant engine pipes are connected too - it has been known for the little pipe to the MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) to split causing sluggish behaviour....
A weak in tank pump can cause sluggish-ness too....

You left an ATF leak for 5 years? If it ran dry for any distance, I would bet the box is fecked, they ain't that strong to start with.

Using a car with a notoriously marginal transmission (in terms of torque capacity) to tow knowing it has a fluid leak isn't going to be conducive to long service life.

Well at least the fluid never got a chance to get dirty. Look on it as constant regular service.
