Is this bad? The changes are a bit erratic, especially 2nd to 3rd, between 20 & 30 mph.

Moved through gears with gearbox oil cold? If not drain some. Level will always be up there with oil hot.

Did that. Level dropped a lot but is now about the distance between the 2 marks above max. Still overfull but at least I won't be making the mistake of taking too much out. Thanks to both for your help.

yeah, mine is a little over when hot and been thru all the gears etc but its how I got it back from the reconditioners so I am just leaving well alone.

The level will ALWAYS be over when it's hot. That is why you check it when it's cold. Some autos have hot level and cold level on stick. Obviously just cold level indicator a Land Rover money saving measure.
