Auto box overheat

Hi guys
So yesterday while eat I traffic my rangie started beeping and showing gearbox overheat, it did this for maybe 30 seconds then stopped, it did it again later while I was doing about 40mph

I've recently topped up my gearbox with about a litre of fluid, oil looks as it should and has no other problems

Where do I start? Does the transfer box have a separate oil? The gear of Is the type with a dipstick, I thought it was odd that it would over heat in traffic as I had only stopped for maybe 30 seconds, could it be the temp sensor which I believe is on the oil cooler?
 
Overfilled the box? Has to be done with the engine/box cold, engine idling, move through the gears and check Oil & filter should be changed every 24K miles.
 
Filled to top mark but as instructed, cold on idle etc, filter on order so that's Saturdays job, does the transfer box have a separate oil supply?
 
check your temp sensor wire attached to the cooler to a terminal block.
have the ignition switched on but no engine running and you need to listen for the 'Panel of Death' buzzer. maybe have someone sitting in the drivers seat when you do it.

What's the panel of death buzzer?
 
Lol ok cool. Not long had the car so hopefully it'll electrocute the previous owner, so what do I do with "the temp sensor wire attached to the cooler to a terminal block".?
 
Check there connected for a start,and clean lugs that spade connectors push on to
Alowing a good connection that the vent is unblocked by a fog light of mud an auto doesn't usually have fog lights fitted as it restricts air to the oil
Cooler ...
 
Am I right in thinking I can't drain all of the oil from the gearbox? How much should I expect to be able to drain? And I assume the transfer box oil should be replaced at the same time?

You will only get about 5 litres of the 9 out, good practice to change and then change again after a couple of weeks. Transfer box oil does not need to be changed as often, but it never does any harm to put new oil in.:)
