Auto Box advice!

Hi chaps

Thinking of buying a TD5 Auto 2004.

Hate auto's (no let's not start a debate-again) but all I can find in our price range are bloody autos

Beggers can't be choosers took above out for a test drive this evening and it just felt like it was slipping- would'nt have it when I put my boot down revs went up but would'nt go anywhere quickly.

I think that it might be the torque converter that then puts the Km's on the clock in doubt as it's supposedly only done 117k km's (68k miles)

What do you reckon & how easy is it to wind a digital clock back? (No I don't want to know how to do it

)

hi Jason,ive got a 53 plate Td5 auto with 93000 mls on her and she pulls like a train!..:5bhurray:
mind u,she has been PSI Superchipped!...
i dont have any probs with mine and would recommend the auto over the manual anyday,smoother,torquier but on the down side she's a wee bit thirstier too...
dont know bout clocking but it is easy to do if you've got the rite software and a laptop but if she's plugged in,the genuine mileage will show up from the ecu memory...
hope this helps and btw,iv had Disco's for 14 yrs and this is the best one iv had by far!.. :banana:

Did you try locking it in 3rd and hitting the sport button - if the box is locked and the engine revs go up the road speed should increase.

Still developing the technique for overtaking in my '03 auto.

ALYN, sorry but what do you mean by Locking in 3rd ? Do you mean just putting into 3rd and pushing sport mode for longer reaching revs before changes happen (isnt that all the sport button does?).

Mines done 87K and pulls well no mods other than EGR

The auto's lock the TC up at certain speeds in each gear (4th is about 55mph and i think 3rd is about 45mph) this gives direct drive with no TC slip

Yes, no slippage, direct drive, better pick up.

Not sure, but I think you can check mileage via ecu with nanocom, maybe?

Yep. thats true.

How much slippage did you get? standard td5 auto's need reving to make em move. when i first got mine i thought something was wrong because it was so slow but an ECU remap made a massive change! (made a driver of a ford c-max TDCi look a fool off the traffic lights last week!

)

I have a mild remap, optimised to towing, what I'd really like is for the TC to lock up about 5mph sooner - would save driving in 3rd on some hilly, twisty A roads.

Maybe Nanocom are working on an autobox module? (I don't even know if this is possible, still getting to grips with an auto Td5 after a manual 300Tdi)

did speak to J Fearn about the TC lock up and shift pattern when he did my ECU. He said that he wasnt looking into it but he was supprised no one else had. reading on the net, the US auto's have a different shift pattern. think the UK ones are mapped for towing rather than day to day driving

I did'nt buy it in the end-gut feeling

Bought another one instead

2000 td5 skipper, already got a new auto box (stealer), head gasket done,full service history etc..... what a kin differance to a tdi

Like chalk & cheese (and I loved my tdi

).

I drove it back tonight (90mile journey) like a reight poof at the begining,flirting with the peddle and by the time we got home I think I was starting to enjoy myself

Time will tell, unfourtunatly not easy or cheap to get them mapped out here (France).

At the moment the only other autobox ECU avaliable is the Compushift. Ashcroft sell them but they are in the £700-800 region.

Relatively easy to fit (I put one in an auto TD5 D-Lander) You can then program shift patterns etc. In fact there is even a 'tow mode'

I am involved in some work on an alternative to the Compushift, but it is early days at the moment.
