When I bought my TD5 D2 Auto the ECU had been breathed on by Alive tuning, it had the EGR blanked, a high performance intercooler and a straight through stainless pipe. It came with a note from Alive stating that the output should be Stage 3 ~ 180 bhp. However, the test drive was not inspiring, the auto box was working hard, but very little power got to the wheels. It was actually painful to drive, slow, noisy and very unsatisfying. Rather than walk away, I read what Ashcroft had to say on the modification of V8 torque converters for TD5s, and as the rest of the D2 was really excellent and the price was significantly less than other worse D2s I had looked at, I took a gamble and bought it.

Suitable V8 torque converters are not as readily available as I had hoped and Ashcroft needed me to supply my own. I finally found one from a 4.6 P38 (THOR type), got it to Ashcroft, and this afternoon I picked up my D2 after having an independent LR specialist fit it.

What a difference, whilst still no sports car, the drive is transformed. It will pull away strongly from standstill without reving much beyond about 2200 rpm and the D2 can finally use the low down torque of the modded TD5. She is significantly faster, quieter, smoother and much more relaxing to drive. Hopefully this should translate into better economy as well. Not cheap with total fitted costs of around £1200, but worth every penny and I should be able to get something for the standard TD5 torque converter on EBay.

If anyone is thinking of modifying the engine of their TD5 Auto, check out the Ashcroft Transmissions website and budget an extra wodge of cash to upgrade the transmission at the same time.
