are landy's in 4 wheel drive all the the time?

inbetween a bit of a argument here, just got my first landrover 110 with the 19j engine, are they permantly in 4 wheel drive or do they go into 4 wheel drive when engaged into diff lock?:

Perminant 4x4. Diff lock locks the centre diff between axles

The older series vehicles had Free Wheeling hubs, these basically disengaged drive to the front wheels, when you wanted 4wd you had to get out and turn the centre hub collar to engage the driveshafts to the hubs.

Later on came automatic locking hubs that would lock up when slip was detected.

Then with introduction of the Ninety and One Ten in 1983ish they had permenant 4wd through a centre diff.

The Freelander when it came out had a centre vcu that would asymmetrically split the drive power with more bias to the rear, when the rears started to slip or spin, the vcu would lock up and send equal power to both axles.

Errrrrr.....kind of but not quite.

Series have selectable 4wd. When in 2wd there is no drive to the front.

FWH's (optional) are to disengage front hubs from the drive train to stop the front wheels driving front diff, front prop etc to reduce drag
