Are Landrovers that bad? I want to know.

On another forum I saw the following question and reply.

It might be an old and much-discussed question, but what’s your opinion? Do you agree? ARE ALL LANDROVERS THOUGHT TO BE UNRELIABLE, OR IS IT PARTICULAR MODELS. If so, which ones? And does it apply to recently manufactured Landrovers?


I want a vehicle for driving through Africa. I love the Land Rover Defender and Discovery, but all the advice seems to point toward a Toyota. Why?

The overall reason why people suggest a Toyota is reliability. The overall reason why not to take a Land Rover product is reliability. It's that simple. If you take a Land Rover (I have owned three spanning 18 years), you have an 99% chance of minor trouble, 60% chance of major but repairable trouble and a 25% chance of major trouble where the repair is lengthy and expensive and difficult-to-get spares are needed.

With a Toyota (assuming it's not an old clap-trap) the probability is a 50% chance of minor trouble, 10% chance of major but repairable trouble and a 1% chance of major, major trouble

get a defender 110 300 tdi fairly reliable and easy to work on fix yourself

What 90 boy said. If its well meaintained and serviced, should be no trouble. Youll still want to take spairs with you, UJs, half shafts, a spair T-box, things like that. But normaly only brake when your giving it serious abuse. The good news is its all fixable.

Where did you get that data from? Seems like somone has made it up on the spot to me.

Toyotas are ugly things - do you really want your photos of the trip spoiled? An adventure is not an adventure without a few mishaps - take a Land-Rover preferably with leaf springs.

landrovers are lovely mate never go for a toyota there hopless carnt beat a landy offroad !

they totally miss the point.

both will break down, but you stand a 90% chance of fixin the landy yerself in the middle of nowhere, using only a hammer and a roll of gaffer tape.

except a freelander, disco3, range rover or TD5

Recently manufactured ones break down as well but are less reliable in that you won't be able to fix it on the hoof.

haha!!! That's out of my hands really but at least i have the footage from yesterday here and now and ready to do something with! Might post some more snippets anyway.
