Hi,

My garage aquasteeled the chassis (LR 90) but also applied it over the chassis number (front RH side)

Is there any advice on what I should do to be able to see the number again?

Have attached photos of before and after as the chassis stamp is not a deep one, so am assuming griding the aquasteel off will not work?

Many thanks

That looks like more than aquasteel to me. It may have been treated with aquasteel, but it's had something else put on top. The aquasteel I know is a milky coloured liquid that reacts with rust to form a dark blue/ black layer. You then have to paint or dinitrol etc over it. I'd ask your garage what else they've put on.

Hi,

Many thanks for the reply.

The garage said they had put waxoyl on top.

If that is the case, would it be straight forward to remove to see the chassis number?

Am loathed to attempt for fear of removing the number as well.

Wire wheel will take off the waxoil and shouldnt hurt the vin but if your worried try a rag with some diesel or thinners
+1 on this. If you're worried about the number being feint anyway, skip the wire wheel and just use some form of solvent as suggested by chrisstdt

Many thanks for the advice, much appreciated, will try it shortly.

You can buy waxoyl, dinitrol etc in a hand held spray can, so could reapply yourself once you've had a look at the number. It does beg the question, Why do you want to see the number?

Mine is 1988, just not original colour / wheels at the moment. Only done 69000miles with history from 1994. Kids love it, looking at getting a stainless exhaust to make the most of the V8.

Hi, 24G means it a V8 for the defender, 5 numbers are the serial number and the suffix is the modification reference.

Sounds like it is the original engine.

On the v5, sounds like original but what is actually fitted.
Original chassis means it can head to the states, is that the plan.
Put pictures up here will get you a valuation and maybe a buyer.

This thread has made me check both engine and chassis number. Both check out as original V8 90 and correspond with v5. So original engine and chassis, just not colour and wheels and only done 60odd thousand. BUT kids and I love it and it will be staying in Sussex for now

Someone I know had an aniversery 90 with the V8 he bought a stainless system but the sound was so head turning that he took It off again, made him sound like a boy racer.
