Thanks Marcus - I'll certainly have a look at the GLASS website.

I do know my way around a OS map, sort of. I'm not sure if I'm looking at the right thing tho - are the greenlanes just the plain white bordered lines, either broken or unbroken...or should I be looking at something else?

What you're looking for is a Byway Open To All Traffic or BOAT. On the Landranger maps (1:50 000) they are like this -+-+-+-+-+-

On Explorer's (1:25 0000) they look like this ++++++++++++

I find Landrangers the best, but some prefer the Explorer range. The landrangers for Dorset are no:195 for Bournemouth & part of the New Forest. West down to beyond Dorchester is no:194. No:184 for Salisbury & around. You can always contact the Rights of Way Officer at the local authority, but to be honest if you've an up to date map & if challenged you're courteous you can't go far wrong.

Do read the GLASS website for the do's & dont's & look out for signs along the way marked 'Byway' usually with a red arrow. Some authorities are better at signposting than others. From memory Dorset is quite good for signage.

You could always express an interest in the planned trip to Salisbury thread. It's always best to go with at least one other truck. You look really daft if you get stuck on yer tod!
