anyone tried these exhausts?

I have read a few very ver bad reports of the janspeed stuff. massive price tag and terrible quality.

RPI have offered to send me some pics of their 4-1 manifold and some prices. They didn't say that they're janspeed, and they said they weren't falcon like the rimmer bros either.... they didn't say they weren't janspeed either. I'm not too worried about the exhaust really, but I want to get the manifold bit right... then I can at least drive it somewhere to get a custome exhaust made.

The flanges on the janspeed stainless y mid and back sections are a bit rough. Not something you can fit a gasket to, just copious amounts of putty.

The flanges on my Janspeed cat-back system had been milled so perfectly flat, any gasket cement I used was simply pushed out untill both flanges met. The flanges although thick are mild steel so rust.

For several years I had the operatunaty at the Billing LR show of comparing Janspeed systems with SS systems and Rimmer's laying near each other, and the workmanship on Janspeed was was the clear winner in the bends and welding and the heavier weight of the pipes.
All that was at least 25 years ago so when my disco exhaust was replaced 8 years later I fitted Janspeed and it fitted easily with the hanger positions and bends matching exactly.

On starting the engine revels went up to 2000rpm them after a 30 seconds the ecu settled the revs back to the normal 750, so the new system had some effect on the engine.

supposed to be a exhaust gasket for flanges, not cement

This was the quality of the flange joints on mine too John. My flanges were stainless but the pipe pushed thru one side and the other flange was countersunk. It looked like they'd marry up with a gasket, but they weren't that good so putty was required. No hassle tho, once done it stayed done for years.
A got a proper bespoke stainless job from manifolds back on my rv8 e30 and it is perfect. I had to get new gaskets off them when I took it apart to drop the fuel tank. But it cost me close to a grand so you'd expect it to be. They also got my decibel spec bang on when it was tested at croft circuit

Just had to refresh my memory on what vehicle this engine will be fitted into, TVR? no, Morgan? no or any other sports car, no, its a 110 defender so don't u think your going OTT on this project looking a manifolds at that price? will u be looking for 8 pot calipers with ceramic pads soon. :D

It's his baby, the money has been spent on the engine, no point in giving big valve heads asthma with stock manifolds. In for a penny;)

In for a penny... exactly.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to waste money (believe it or not) but I am just trying to find the right the bits to match/compliment the engine.

If a stock p38 manifold will do that, then great...

Ya, I can see its your baby and your hobby and it's yours so can do what u like, l'm in full agreement, but what's the outcome u expect, it can't be economy so is it performance but then 110 in its standard format isn't a performance vehicle, and the same goes for discos like mine, although at 120mph down hill and the rev limiter cuts is fast enough for me in a disco I dont that now, I hardly use it but I have the choice of another a couple of other cars which are faster... Fast I like.:)

I've got my tuned Saab 9k for when I want to be daft... I got the fast car thing out of my system with 12 months owning a jag XF sv8... God that was a nice car!

What I'm making here is my own warped idea of my ideal defender... I like v8 noises.. But I'm very choosy... I like the stag end of the scale much more than the modern v8 end... The stag end of the scale sounds so much more musical.

In terms of performance, it's not a Chelsea job... It'll never corner well, but with this engine it will accelerate from the lights, and will keep up with motorway traffic, even up hill.

After a run in with the fuzz at a speed I won't declare, I learned that acceleration and soundtrack are the things to enjoy. Top speed is just not practical any more.

Now is the difference between 260bhp and 270bhp going to matter? Probably not... But I'm not going to deliberately fit a sub-par solution, when a better one exists.... As long as the price and performance are in balance.

Either its an expensive modification or he's part ferengi. £107 cheaper at real steel

I'm pretty sure most car part sellers are part ferengi!

I've found them on the real steel catalogue - £238.32 - that price seems to include vat too. That doesn't seem unreasonble to me... I could end up paying £100 for some half decent p38 manifolds easily I'd have thought. The only issue being the 4-1 config, but I given the length of the primaries, I think that may well be minimal. I'll give real steel a call today.

wow - that was easier than I thought... Real steel actually seem like rather nice people to deal with. They did point out that headers are non refundable, due to the nature of people scuffing them up during fitment, but I can live with that.

I think the worst case here is if the collector is in the wrong place - in which case it can be cut off and modified easily enough, as it's all mild steel. N.B. These are sold by RS as for RRC classic fitment, but we're all reasonably happy that they're the same as the ones on the RPi ebay link.

RPi did say that "we on use mild steel manifolds as we find that, due to the brittle nature of stainless, they crack in roughly the same space of time that mild ones rust.".... Sounds like a sales pitch to me, but I recognised that no-one is going to be making manifolds/headers out of top quality HT stainless, so it may be valid. Either way, I'll have some thing that will allow me to get to the engine running, and can be used as a pattern at a later date.

Thanks for your input folks - and thank's especially to cooltide for saving me over £100! I certainly owe you a pint!

Well it seems they don't respond to voicemails or emails... Obviously they're too busy to need any more business...

The search goes on.
Wont answer my calls but replied to my email, they say those exhausts fot a 90 but will run close to the chassis rails...
also told me that their cheapo rocker assemblies are as terrible as everywhere else

hmmmm, tvr wedge exhausts.... my mate used to have one of those.... it was like a garaged bonfire that he could throw his wallet onto every weekend :D

It'd be nice if it fit, I'll give them a bell and see if they know.

failing that, I've been reading an aussie forum that says that people consider the 3.9 disco 4-2 cast manifold to be pretty decent flowing, and then pair them with a decent 2-1 stainless exhaust system.

I'm not sure if the standard disco 4-2 manifold would be better or worst then the rimmer bros 4-1 tubulars though.... gas dynamics being what they are, the extra length of the tubulars would seem to offer the best flow options
Yea p38 manifolds are meant to be pretty good but they tend to crack so it can be hard to find good ones
