Anyone taken apart an electronic speedo?

I have a LHD Defender X reg, year 2000 with speedo in KMH. Considering a dial conversion from Lockwood or KMH-MPH.

It looks as though the speedo needs to be taken apart and the needle removed and replaced.

Has anyone done this successfully? Is it pull off, screwed on...
 
If done mech ones not electroninc. On the mech ones the needle rests on a stop, if you take it off without locking the spindle you never get it back right because the spindle flips round. Don't know if same applies to electroninc.
 
The Td5 speedo unit can be programmed to read in KMH or MPH, obviously the dial backing needs changed as well. You’d need to open it up and access the chip with an EEPROM reader to do this. There’s a chap goes by Cwazywabbit on LR4x4 who has done this.

Would be easiest to just buy a second hand UK-spec speedo and swap it in. But to change the mileage you’d need to do the same process as above.
 
I have found a couple of companies that supply screen printed dials to fit the original speedo. No need for reprogramming. Lockwood do these for £55.
I was bidding on a second hand unit that is currently at £103 and will probably sell for more. The car it came from has probably done between 100 and 200 thousand miles.
Mine has done 20,000 so I think I'm better off keeping a little used speedo and sticking a new dial on it.
Unless anyone has had a bad experience with this sort of thing it is looking like my best option. Not fussed about the odometer being in miles.

Replacement dials serve a purpose, however the trip meter and odo will still be recording and displaying in Km so it will look like you are doing 1.6 times the distance as you actually are in miles. I think I would prefer them to match as it won't look odd on your MOT record as they will probably record it as miles but obviously your choice.
 
Good news - I have a lovely new dial to stick onto my KPH speedo.
Less good news - I can't work out how to get into it! There are 3 torx screws in the back, but it looks as though these hold the PCB on the housing.
Any offers?
 
Looking at the speedo I think that must be the only way. Almost impossible to do this without making a mess. I should have investigated further before I decided to go with the change of dial.
