Anyone rebuilt their R380 gearbox? Too much for an amateur?

Hi guys,

My Disco crunches going from 1st to 2nd and then there's a small "catch" when going into 3rd. Methinks it's time to get inside it and have a look while I'd doing the DMF and clutch.

Can someone with time and a decent set of tools do things like syncro's, dogs and sliders? Or would I be better off just coughing up for an Ashcroft recon?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated - looks like it will be a big job.

Will.

youd need to fit 4 x ftc3584 ansd 2 x ftc5018 ,and 6 x ftc4992 to cover selection issue to strip box you need to pull seal collar from rear and a press or pullers to remove bearings ,it is one of the easiest boxes to rebuild

Well that's encouraging. Ashcroft do full rebuild kits but that seems pretty in depth. As long as the pinions are of and the dog teeth aren't too knackered it shoudl be ok.

It's the special tools I'm worried about :(.

how do you mean in depth ?you cant change baulk ring without full strip down ,unless your unlucky reverse ftc5070 is only gear that dog teeth wear on ,1/2 inch battery or air gun helps with layshaft nut,you wont know about bearings till you look

Haha might as well do it all then! DD probably has sone of the more specialised tools and perhaps I can borrow 'em!

It doesn't seem to be outside my abilities - I'm damn good and precision jobs and following instructions so hopefully I can do it. What an achievement it would be :). Looks like this kit has everything I need unless there is serious wear on the gears themelves.
