I could do with a proxy-look at a lathe I'm interested in - too far for me
to go on spec and too old to buy without at least some indication that it's
in good nick.

I'll be quizzing the seller but he's not especially savvy about lathes by
his own admission.

What type/age/size of lathe out of interest ?
I might be able to get someone to look at it for you, he's in Leicester,
and he'd need paying for his petrol, but he is a machinist by trade.

I've rather gone off this one now, it sounds as though it's missing some
rather relevant gears. 's an old colchester master, probably pre-war -
pre-dates the screwcutting gearbox found on later ones, and thus you need a
set of changewheels, which the bloke knows nothing about... It's also
rather a long way away.
