so it's a 2002 P38?? If it has the Harman Kardon sound system, which I think most late P38's came with by this point, then it's not as simple as just replacing the head unit. Do you have Harman Kardon written on the speaker grills or on the radio anywhere??

dont know if it helps but my HK head unit went t i t s up on me i had a clarion fitted only took an hour sounds ok now but i tried a few places first they said they could not do it as needed special wire loom but think most audio specialist would have one dont know where you live ? but a good place in tamworth thats where i went

Are you upgrading for better sound or because your head unit doesn't work. If its the second it can be refurbished. I recently had the same problem, search for my thread and have a look at the advice I received.
If you are convinced you want a replacement the problem is that the factory system is the only one that works seamlessly with the steering wheel mounted controls and the multiple HK amps of which there are 4 in the doors and 1 for the sub. While there are said to be adaptors and harnesses available that supposedly bridge the compatibility gap, I think realistically you would have to give up on the steering controls and bypass the amps. There's a thread on that too somewhere, it suggests replacing all the amps with cross-overs. You'll need 3-ways for the front doors, two-ways in the rears and a simple low-pass filter for the sub. That way you can still use the original speakers if you wish which you probably won't because you'll want speakers that "suit" your system and your sound preferences.
Obviously I've assumed you're not trying to make some kind of earth shaking boom box out of your landy and are thinking of buying a head unit with built-in amplification. If you want to go for the big stuff then its a question of ripping everything out and fitting amps, capacitors, maybe an extra battery, a bank of subs, so on and so forth!

Your 2002 MY will only have a single DSP amp in the rear quarter behind the sub. Separate door amps are fitted on the earlier models. The biggest problem you will have is finding a head unit with line level outputs to suit the amp. There is a diagram kicking around for an adaptor to throttle back the standard speaker level outputs from a standard head unit or you can do as suggested and re-plumb the whole system.

I bought from ebay a steering wheel (w/ radio controls) and an alpine unit (XQD10158OLF).
Meanwhile, i bought an aftermarket stero (kenwood) that works fine with the steering wheel controls (had yo buy an adaptor to use the controls and route a wire from the rotary to the stereo).
Other day changed the kenwood to the alpine unit.
Steering wheel controls dont work and sound from the speakers is very low...
Any clue about this?
Despite newer stereo offers better sound, would like to keep the original look...

The Alpine head units are line out only, they dont have built in amps as mentioned above they feed a single DSP amp in the boot. I have a feeling the resistor values in the steering wheel controls are different depending on which head unit was fitted ie Clarion on the older models or Alpine on the newer ones.
tHANKS TO ALL FOR THE REPLY. I just got the RR one month ago and still learning how they behave. The reason why I want to change the stereo is because sometimes theres no sound coming out of the speakers, bu the radio is on. later on the day the radio works fine. I think I have a grounding problem somewhere in the truck.

I'm looking to replace my original Alpine unit, I spoke to Alpine as I'm thinking of installing a complete mulitimedia/satnav unit the INE-S900R but was worried about compatibility with the steering wheel controls. Their technical support team recommended a product from an American company called Axxess, their agents in the UK are connects2:

It apparently learns remaps the connections, I haven't seen it but it sounds interesting.
That might solve the steering wheel control issues

That is one way, but you would need the appropriate loom aswell, quite a big job methinks. Plus the amps are horrendously expensive. Your looking at £500 from a dealer unless you can find a second hand one, but they are quite rare.
Maybe better of going for aftermarket amp and crossovers as sugested.

Look for water leaks corroding the connector to the amp in the rear quarter.

There are some amps in ebay, but couldnt find any dsp but you're right, better going to an aftermarket amplifier.....
