Anyone cut themselves open recently?

I tend to cut myself open on anything except the landy for some reason. The worst I've had so far is the radiator fins slowly grating my elbow while I was changing the cambelt.

Recently been swapped from aspirin to a proper anticoagulant 'cos of a heart arrhythmia (makes you more prone to stroke, apparently) so I bleed like a pig. Head butted the tailgate on the car at a hill climb meet and the attending doctor ordered me down to the local A&E to get my head glued up and to check for any internal bleeding.

Talking of Head injuries, I must have cracked my head open about 3 times when I was younger in various places!

My last serious blood injury occurred when instead of getting a marker out I decided it was best to mark some holes for a number plate with a drill....It was a good idea right up until the drill bit went through the plastic and into my left hand middle finger! Lucky for me it just took the skin off and mangled the outer layers up a bit hehe.

yeah, hopefully you damaged it enough to get it off the road, hideous car lol

Yeah, it was well and truly fooked by the time I had finished with it. Front end stoved in, radiator gone through, bonnet very dented, windscreen smashed. And I spent the next few weeks picking bits of glass out of my face too. Bloke got a bit of glass in his eye too apparently which was unfortunate.

I turned my brand new racing bike into a folding bike and although Dad got me another bike but I had to remove the racing handlebars because he didn't want a repeat of all that.

Motorbikes and thumbs are an unlucky combination for me, I'm going for surgery on my left thumb (the other one!) 2 weeks on Friday.

Good luck with the surgery, mate. Has it recoiled back completely? Will they be able to get full function back?

Can't remember if it was before or after I crushed my Dad's foot though. And notice the 'I hit a car' and not a car hit me? I was going like stink on a brand new racing bike, on the wrong side of the road on a right hand blind bend. I only had myself to blame and I was lucky I wasn't killed.

We lived on a hill when I was a kid. I came down the street at a hell of a pace one day and started to pull out to overtake a car parked just up from my house. The guy opened his door and I drove in to it flat out. Ripped an ear quite badly and he must have been a canny fell cos he took me and my mum to hospital. Whenever it comes to mind my only thoughts are how much it must have damaged his door, but I have no recollection. Your bike crash sounds a hell of a lot worse than mine. Those Princess's had a flat low nose and wedge bonnet. Perfect for hitting the screen
By the way, your Dad's foot wasn't your fault.

Do any of you find that with more severe injuries (the ones that need a trip to hospital) you don't necessarily realise how bad they are at first? They don't even hurt very much in some cases. More minor injuries sometimes hurt a lot more
I agree too. I had no idea that I had cut the back of my leg so badly. Yet a paper cut stings like :censored:

I had an unfortunate one a while ago. I was pulling a dent out of the sill on my van but I didn't have a slide hammer. So I improvised with a great big bit of stainless steel round bar. It was about 7 inches long and 4 inches across. I put it on a bit of threaded bar with a thick plate threaded onto the end.
All was going will with the dent pulling until I smashed my little finger inbetween the stainless stock and the endplate. It didn't just crush my finger but actually split it from the tip to the 2nd joint. It took about 6 weeks to finally seal and stop splitting open. Should have gone and got it stitched really.

When I was around 17 I was trying to start our lawnmower engine after it had sat outside in the garden all winter. Eventually it fired but it 'ran away' with itself - probably a sticky governor and loads of petrol built up in the inlet tract. By the time I'd stopped it by putting a hand over the air intake, I realised there was blood running up my arm. I had decapitated my middle finger on something but hadn't realised I'd done it. Maybe I'd caught it on the impellors on the flywheel that blow air past the engine, but I didn't feel a thing at the time. The healing process involved several hospital visits. At first they tried to stick the flap that had once been the tip of my finger back on with sticky strips, but that clearly wasn't working so a week or so later they stitched it. Fortunately it stuck itself back on eventually, and to this day my fingertip is somewhat misshapen. It would be a dead giveaway if I ever left fingerprints on anything.

Hopefully!
I damaged the ulnar collateral ligament, and 20 odd years later there's no strength in it. They're going to take a tendon from my wrist and graft it in. On the bright side, I get a couple of months off work!

Happy days!!!

Maybe the damaged ligament has stretched over the years and the muscles can no longer pull it far enough. It's amazing what they can do with ligament grafting. My eldest son and wife have both had their anterior cruciate ligaments replaced in their knees. (one snapped playing football the other skiing) Fantastic results! Hope your op goes well too. :)

taking a boiler off the wall once, tight cupboard sharp bit of steel on the combustion door sliced through a vein in my arm blood everywhere used massive amounts of bog roll and tape to stop it bleeding and just carried on had to visit a+e eventually

I had an ACL replacement when I was 18, about 22 years ago. I was 15 when I damaged it skateboarding by doing a handrail and landing with my left foot off the board. I kinda did the splits but the knee dislocated and tore the ACL. Thing is I was meant to be trying out for the North Oxfordshire Athletics team a few weeks later, so that put paid to that. I can still remember the disappointment on my PE teachers face when I arrived in school in a full leg plaster. But the 3 years of wear and tear from a lose knee joint and almost weekly dislocations before they fixed it have given the joint a bit of a battering.

On the plus side, I can usually tell a couple of days in advance if it's going to rain!

It's funny how they can do that when the human body is mostly water anyway. How do the nerve endings know?

The internet isn't really big enough for me to describe all of the stupid things that I've done, but here's a favourite.

McPherson strut, spring compressors. Tightening them down very sensibly, as usual, bit one side, bit the other, check hooks still nicely engaged. Sitting on the ground with it on my lap. Or at least I was. Because it suddenly wasn't there any more. Put my arms up to cover my head because I knew that most of the stuff had gone upwards. Various noises from neighbours' garden. Notice that one forefinger is really really beginning to hurt. Hmm completely flat at the end.

Rush to kitchen for aerosol anaesthetic/disinfectant and spray liberally. Feel faint. Make coffee, grab a smoke and head next door (other neighbour) for a sit down with some lads working on the house, and am fairly sure that I'm going to pass out and need someone to do whatever's needed. God it hurts. Keep spraying.

Gradually the 'yellow' disappears from my eyesight and I'm feeling human. Oh. it's bleeding quite a lot. Suck finger.

Remember I mentioned the anaesthetic? Yep, mouth and tongue completely numb, can't drink coffee, can't smoke. Feel sick.

Anaesthetic wore of like after a dentist trip, finger hurt for a while, lost nail but otherwise fine.

I will never ever use diy spring compressors again. To this day I can't understand how one of them slipped because I was being so careful.

Sorry I couldn't help but laugh

A couple of days ago I hopped into my MG Midget and as I fiddled about something jumped off the dashboard onto the transmission tunnel. Before my brain could get into gear I had picked it up......the cigar lighter burnt a nice neat circle in my left index finger! There was quite a smell of burnt flesh for a few minutes until the air turned blue from my swearing.

Surprisingly enough it is not so much painful but annoying as I keep poking it while trying to get the summer house built.

Springs are always doing this to me. One moment you've got it there firmly gripped in the pliers or whatever and are trying to hook it in where it is supposed to go. Then all of a sudden it's flicked itself into anther dimension and isn't there any more. Springs are all joined together in S Space and can flick themselves instantaneously from one part of the universe to another. That's what those gravitational wave observatories in Livingston and Hanford are all about - detecting the gravitational waves of disappearing springs. Suddenly the probability cone of a spring being there inverts and it's vanished forever, at least from any universe I'm likely to inhabit. I've never done it with a suspension spring, but circlips and brake springs are very vulnerable to this.

Well, I have plenty of time for musing about the nature of the universe whilst looking for springs that have shot off. The likelihood of their disappearing is inversely proportional to the likelihood of a spare being available.
