Hi guys

New on here so forgive me if this has been asked before, Has anyone chipped a Disco TD5 if so could you tell me if they've had any problems and the advantages/disadvantages. I need to be certain before i shell out my hard earned "wonga", It's in for a new cylinder head gasket soon so I might get them to chip it then while the bonnet's open;).

My gaffer chipped his, cost him around 450 i think, done by Landranger 4x4 in Deeside.
No problems and the thing positively goes like s*** off a shaovel, unreal acceleration on it.
 
only thing ive chipped is a rangerover 2.5DT (1998)
cost 150 quid from collins superships in congleton
put 35 bhp onto it, improved MPG slightly (if u drive it carefully)
and now it really pulls well!

Landranger will be doing the job for me as they've just done my ABS hub and sorted my Chrismas lights out on the dash and they seem to know they're stuff, its in for the gasket next week but might leave the chip till i get back off holiday. the misses is playing F**k cos the cash is dwindleing out of the account at a rate of knots, b*****k's to her the landy comes first then my 2 year old daughter :D

OK. so you put a chip in it, Its faster, a bit more economical, accelarates like a good un.... Wots the down side? does it over stress the engine, brakes wot? Do you have to tell Mr Insurance?
 
hiya sqwirral, i'm in prestatyn, isnt neston that interbred town where there is only one name in the phone book ;).

leaky, the downsides are, void warranty, void insurance if not informed, possible stressing to engine etc etc ;)

outback, yes you are spot on, changing the microchip in the ecu
 
chipping or remap, basically changes the ECU settings e.g. increases fueling slightly and turbo pressure, turbo comes in at a lower rev range etc etc, up to 40bhp can be added and a shed load of torque which is really makes a difference!
Mr insurance by law should be informed, but me being me i wouldnt say any thing lol, some may think thats silly but i dont
It does not over stress the endine one little bit!

tempted to make a pun about endines and engines, but won't :D

It will add extra stress to an engine, but not to breaking point if it s a goodun, most likely problems will be (especially on older, high mileage vehicles): Gearbox, Transfer Box, Diffs and Props, not being the strongest items in the world in the first place.

Just about to get mine done, probably by Bell Auto's unless I hear different (sounded like a decent chap on the phone), but I budget about a grand a year on mechanical repairs (before servicing) for my hard worked vehicle.

£150 Sounds to cheap to be a remap of chip swap especialy from SC .

Correct on most diesel cars but with exeption to the TD5 as you carnt adjust the boost in the maps from the ecu :(.

This has to be done by other means if needed.

But yes when mapping a file we increase fueling and torque limiters amongst some other tricks :)
 
Yes Yella Neston is a bit like you said ;) I think i'm the only one here with pure blood lol (moved here 5 years ago)

I heard a rumour going round(don't quote me on this)that the TD4 and TD5 engines have been governed to get them through Euro3 emisions tests and all the chip does is put the engines back to standard, If this is true then the engine is obviously capable of taking the extra power and torque. Like I said it's only what i've heard so don't all go sticking your size 10's in :eek:.Another question is, Is the running gear on the TD5 the same as the V8? if it is surely it would cope with the extra stresses! as I'm new to the disco's I'm sure you'll tell me the answers.
 
not sure i understand why peeps buy a landy and then want to chip it to increase the speed!
surely the whole point of a landy is a leisurely drive, but superior over other drivers/cars?
my view is that i can go anywhere (slowly) and hopefully get 30mpg too.
 
I know where your coming from Yella ;) It's not like back in the days when you'd strap a "cammed" up V8 in a 2a, they'd be fine pottering around in but start chasing XR3's and RS turbo's and things used to give up, then came the hunt for rangey difs etc etc

I tow 3 tonnes most days and need the extra power just to get up some of the hills here in the chilterns, there arent many alternatives to a landrover for being able to legally tow 3 1/2 tonnes most are 2700kg to 3000kg, hence my need for chipping. after which they no longer have to be slow and leisurely :p
