Started trying to take the steering wheel off my project 90 as I want to remove the plastic shroud from around the column. Have removed the boss cover and the retaining nut but the wheel appears to be stuck fast to the column.

I have tried whacking the spokes from behind with a rubber mallet but I don't want to get too brutal in case I damage something.

I note that there are two tapped holes on the boss diametrically opposite each other. Are these blind or can you thread a bolt right through them to ease the wheel off?

Any suggestions appreciated before I go back into gorilla mode.

Squirt some WD40 onto he shaft and work the wheel left/right until you get bored.

Also, make sure you put the securing nut back on - just a couple of turns, otherwise when the wheel does finally give, you'll be ****ting yourself in the mush at one hell of a force... :D

There's nothing else holding it on then that I've missed? Just persevere with the percussion method after lubricating and wiggling?

On the 2.5td you posted the shroud is a split clamp style with some long screws going trough the two halfs , the wheel doesnt have to come off to get it off.

I ended up buying tte puler in the end off ebay as the wheel obviously had never been off. 25 years.

Even with the puller it was a struggle.

I ended up putting the nut on , a chunk of tension with the puller and chapping it from the rear with a chappy stick. It came eventually.

Two tapped holes are blind, they are for a puller, you could make one out of a flat plate and 2 bolts the size of your blind holes - and a bigger bolt and a nut that fits it welded to the plate

Using MarkL's method worked. It only took a minute although I might have already loosened it with previous bashing.

Having the steering wheel off makes it much easier to work on the switchgear. I'm wanting to try the wiper stalk on my 110 as the wipers have packed up on that.

Thanks for the help guys.
