Due to losing keys I have taken the lock of my S3 Diesel, and it doesn't look anything like a mechanism that I know how to play with.... The column lock is the sliding thing on the left- it is captive so how do I take it out.
I bet the answer is use KEY to open lock.. BUT I have lost the Fekkin Keys....... Help!

A proper locksmith can make a key for a lock by measuring the internals of the lock itself (damned clever too!) but it does cost a bit.
Call one up and get a quote? Or, if its just to get it apart, try a set of "jigglers" or similar.
Most old vehicle locks are easily breached.

An auto lock specialist came and looked today- it was older than his data- and wasn't able to help. so I drilled it out later this afternoon. (After 2 hours on the phone to the DVLA- What sort of people do they employ there?)

If you'd been able to wait I could have loaned you a set of jigglers to try. Never mind.

When my ignition switch/lock was playing up, I just replaced it with a complete new unit. A Lucas, new old stock unit cost me about £70 although I have since seen them cheaper.

Re the DVLA, I used to be a Civil Servant, our department brought in an "diversity program", we got an clerical assistant who couldn't read or write.
The way that Govement works is in a parrallel reality.

You indeed need to rotate the barrel slightly (with the key) and insert the blunt end of a drill bit (hole on side) to release the lock.
Not much help I know.
Just to add a bit of smugness, one of the first things I did was get a spare cut. I think it was £6.
Hope you get it sorted.

"Its was older than his data" says it all, he wasn't up to the job. If its not on the computer they don't know what to do. I'm dealing with a pumber who has left a job with the new flush button hanging loose "because the hole is too big so its impossible to fit" no concept of getting some adaptors, sleeves or perish the thought, making somethng!

I had a locksmith adapt an ignition lock to fit a current key. This wasn't for a Land Rover but for my 1990s Japanese car.

Part of the alloy lock barrel had physically sheared in half with age and use. I got a unit off another car at the breakers and he adapted it to fit my existing key so that the ignition key would still match the doors and boot.

This only cost £24 to have done (back in 2011), so I would think someone who knew what they were doing could make a key to fit your lock.

Go to an autojumble and buy a few lock barrels (any from the same lock series - usuall FS. Put your key in and get the one that closest, then file down the lever that stick up (or take them out and file each one properly but it's fiddley)
