Hi Wonk
I note your comment about leaking power steering on your L series. Just thought I'd mention that I've just cured that on mine. A right PITA to get at but when I did eventually remove the power steering pump I found it was the original hose clamp on the low pressure side that was loose and leaking. A new bit of hose and a jubilee clip and no trouble since.......just sayin!

I did rebuild the pump when I bought it as the previous owner told me that the pump was leaking. I didn't notice the hoses too much though. It didn't solve the oil leak and I also have lost any power steering fluid since I did that. I think now it is the vacuum pump. I did take a closer look tonight now that this conversation has reminded me about it, definitely allot of oil around there. I'll dig into it a bit deeper this weekend and hope it's a similar issue with leaking hoses. I don't like taking the alternators out on these engines.
Started a to do list for the Freelander recently, it's starting to look like I should start sooner rather than later to be ready for winter!
