Evening all,

Look, this maybe really simple to all you lot, but I seem to be going round in circles. . .
How do I find out what alternator I need??

The thing is, I bought my Defender 110 second hand and have not got it listed anywhere if it's a 200 or factory fitted 300tdi upgrade.
Which falls onto the next question about my alternator, does it really matter if I buy one which is for a 200/300???
And also (dumbass I know!!) how do I tell if its a L/h or R/h model I need??
Left or right of what ?? Drivers side out, front viewing, side of the engine it's mounted??
I'd appreciate some simple answers if anyone can supply any as I am a real NON-mechanic, simple billy and Johnny answers PLEASE !!!!!

Thanks a lot.

I would think L/H or R/H means is your car a left hand drive or right hand drive model.
200 engine has v profile auxillary belt and the 300 has a flat one.
If you want to be sure check the engine number - I believe the 300 is on the block under no 1 glow plug.
You'll need a torch and a wire brush and maybe even a rag with white spirit on.

Yes, it does matter which one you have or replace it with. The pulleys are different as has already been mentioned (but they are easily swapped around) the 300tdi has 100amp alternator but the 200tdi has a weak 60amp alternator. It's a common upgrade to replace it with a 100amp version as it supplys more power for your added defender goodies. And yeah RH/LH is referring to weather its a left hand drive or a right hand drive car.
Hope that answers all your questions

Thanks all - sorry if its simple billy and Johnny stuff - but I don't know, and can't get a decent answer - hence coming here!
Thanks again for your help - I'm thinking if I just go for a straight 100amp R/H alternator I'll be fine. I've only got a VERY basic radio and occasionally a #### nag, so nothing too draining.
Hand in my pocket and finding time to swap it now.
Cheers all !!

most 300tdi defender were fitted with the 65 amp alternator.
Fitting the 100amp one is almost a straight swap you just have to upgrade the wiring to the starter from the alternator
