Thanks to the advice on the forum I have been able to remedy two of the three water leaks in my Disco. The first was a windscreen leak just above the mirror that dripped onto and killed the stero head unit the second was blocked AC drains that overflowed onto both driver and passenger sides.
The windscreen was a replacement that was not sealed 100% so a small strip on black mastic over the windscreen has resolved this.
The AC drains were cleaned however, the overflow was left untreated for quite some time by the previous owner and so minor rust damage occured to both the driver and passenger footwells. Following sanding, priming and a complete repaint of the whole interior floor of the car (removed seats and centre console) there were no more problems........or so I thought.......
This is a left hand drive and I noticed after a recent road trip that the passenger footwell was once again damp. I checked to AC coolant however the levels were fine and the AC drains are free flowing.
I read in the forum that the bonnet bracket seals to the body can be a culprit. I removed the glove box and water tested the left external bracket to see if I could detect a leak but no luck.
One thing that did strike me was the plenum air intake below the windscreen. The plenum air intake runs the length of the base of the windscreen. Water runs off to the left a right hand sides and drains through the wings. Below the plenum air intake there is a second channel to once again drain water off to both the left and right hand sides of the car through the wings.
On the right side of this channel is the heater unit air intake. It protrudes into this channel and is sealed around its exterior base. When I water tested around it I found no leak. I poured a considerable amout of water down the windscreen and noticed two things. Firstly there was a small gap along the plenum air intake seal against the windscreen and secondly the plenum air intake channel could not drain fast enough and so it overflowed through the pollen filter in one or two places.
The water that passed under the seal shot directly into the heater air intake additionally the overflow dropped through the pollen filter into the heater air intake also.....
On the inside of the car I could see the foam covered flap inside the heater unit was soaked. It then slowly proceeded to drain through the unit into the footwell.
I realise it takes quite a downpour to cause this overflow and it was one such downpour during my roadtrip that cause this exact incident to happen. As I live in the middle of Sweden the plenum air intake will end up with plenty of snow on top which will most likely melt and drip into the air intake.
I plan to ensure the seal at the bottom of the windscreen is tight to avoid the windscreen flow off entering the heater air intake and I plan to devise a repair to avoid the overflow effect through the pollen filter.
Before I do so can anybody tell me if they too have had this problem and if so how have they addressed it.
