Hi guys,

Have a 2001 td5 auto which has blown all the oil out of the return pipe twice now:mad:,

first time it happened in the few days leading up to it would get a loss of power, I would stop and then the gearbox light, sport mode light and m/s light came on. it wouldnt go in drive but reverse worked. switched it off and switched back on and it was fine then blew all the oil out the return pipe:(

I replaced the return pipe no problems for 3 weeks then yesterday morning just got on the M40 and loss of power again and boom oil everywhere again.

I am wondering if it is building up too much pressure in the gearbox.

Any ideas or anyone had this happen? any help much appreciated

Cheers, Fuzrat

Could you describe the 'return pipe' ? Not sure what you mean by that.

Assuming you have a gearbox oil cooler, does that get hot?

Are you happy that the correct oil is being used in the box?

Peter

Hi peter,

the return pipe i am on about is the one from the oil cooler under the rad back to the gearbox. its a rubber hose crimped onto a metal pipe and it is blowing the crimp apart.

I am thinking that the hydraulic pressure in the gearbox is building up too high and it is not releasing itself properly. Is there a sensor on the box to activate a pressure relief valve that may have an intermittant fault maybe?

Oil cooler seems to be cool enough its warm but would expect that with hot oil going through it, but its not roasting hot.

definitely sure the correct gear oil is (or was in there, now all over M40 between J6&7)

Thanks Fuzrat

Hi,
If you got sport and manual lights flashing it's gone to safe or limp home mode which will explain the lack of power as you only get 2nd and 3rd. Could you be overheating trans fluid by increased revs as you can't get 4th and lock up.
See my post on " Green M ans S lights flashing "
Hope this helps.

Do you have the correct order of events? Is the pipe being disconnected followed by the lights and drive problem and not the other way around? I have had A/T pipe failure with results like yours, that is the pipe blew then the lights etc. The A/T pipes system is not the best bit of engineering on a D11. Your reference to the hose crimped to the pipe blowing off sounds like a defective pipe that has failed under ordinary pressure, about 40 psi I believe. If you haven't replaced the pipe and simply refitted the old one prior to your M40 experience you may have simply repeated the events of the first failure.

Definitely the right order of events, a couple of times before the first pipe burst the m/s and sport mode lights came on. I stopped turned off the ignition and they reset, all was fine again then the pipe went. thats why I am wondering if there is an underlying fault.
