Im going to contribute to the list of TD4 engine issues on the first page! :D

Todays issue;
Missfire on idle (engine rocking) and loads of white diesel smoke.
Engine doesn't hunt and no engine management light.
Engine seems to fire on all 4 above 1500rpm but lacking power.

I have been searching around the forum and seen the fuel rail pressure sensor mentioned - I tried unplugging and running the engine - it was worse when it was unplugged as the engine started hunting and the management light illuminated.

I previously had a no-start condition around 6 months ago - this turned out to be down to an injector with excessive leak-back, I replaced with a used injector with the same part number and code.
I also replaced the low-pressure fuel pump and filter at this time.

I have tried a few other things tonight - another leakdown test, which was inconclusive as all injectors seemed to leak back similar amounts.
Also checked all boost hoses and vac lines as well as cleaning the crankcase breather.

I'm thinking I possibly have a poorly injector - so my next step is to pull all the injectors and send them away to diesel bob for an overhaul.

Just wondering if there is anything else worth checking before I send the injectors away?

Was leakback done with engine running or just ignition on?

Both - none came through whith the ignition on, about 100ml came through each injector with the engine running for a minute or so.

I pulled the injectors yesterday and found injector 1 with soot and carbon all the way up the injector - looks like the copper crush washer may have failed or and old one re-fitted.
I replaced injector 3 a few months back which was fine, so the injectors must have been removed by a previous owner.

I am working not too far from Rimmer Bros today so going to pop down and get some new copper washers and injector seals - im hoping the issue was with cyl1 leaking combustion pressure past the injector causing low compression.
Worth a try before I send the injectors away. I couldnt hear it chuffing / feel pressure at the top of the engine when it was running though.

I will keep you posted!

Couldn't test last night as one of the injector securing brackets snapped when tightening :(

£5 from Rimmer Bros - so not too bad, just means waiting until tomorrow until I can test.

Thanks for the advice - always wary with metal surrounded by plastic! Studs are fine - was following the spec 5NM + 180°.
Clamp went around 150° - fractured from the thin part at the back.
New clamp arrived thismorning so will be back to the unit after work later.

Re-fitted the injectors this evening - no difference :(

Injectors back out again - packaged and ready to send off to diesel bob in the morning.

I took a video - currently uploading (upload speed at home is really bad!)

Hi all, had exactly the same, turned out to be a broken alternator bracket.
Common apparently, once fixed it purred?
May not be related to your problem but worth a look, as was Amazed when they told what it was as I would never have looked at it?

Thats an interesting one!
Ill be sure to check that later - thanks.

Had a phonecall from Diesel Bob on Saturday saying the injectors werent in the best of shape.
A few were overfuelling and one delayed fire - which is what I was hoping for!

The injectors are currently being overhauled and will be collecting later on.
Fingers crossed.
