When I open the rear door first thing in the morning, the glass drops the required amount and I open the door. When I close the back door again, the glass lowers. I start the engine and have to drive off pressing both up and down intermittently on the dash switch. After about 5 minutes, the window eventually goes back up when the up switch is pressed. The battery is a new heavy duty so nothing to do with low power. A friend of mine says it's due to early morning dampness in the air.
I have gone through the forum but come across nothing about this so any help would be appreciated.

When did you put the new battery on as that might of confused the computer. Have you fully pressed the rear window down and back up again a few times. This might help the regulator from seizing the cable.

No, a five door 2002 TD4 GS. I will do the recalibration tomorrow as suggested.

If you get a graunching sound this could mean the cables are rusty depending on how much usage. If stays down and fails to return cables definitely rusted. My passenger rear door did this and I ended up pulling the glass away from the gripper and taped up with duct tape. Some put a staff of wood to keep the glass up until replacement time. Hopefully it just the recalibration needed though.

Comes back up eventually after about 5-10 minutes. Only seems to happen first thing in the morning.
As I am not a morning person, maybe I have got a not a morning Freelander :)

Happened again this morning, opened the back door to put a bag in, when I closed the door, the window lowered itself again and stayed down. Drove into town with the back window open. After about 3 km and continually pressing the up and down switch the window finally raised.

Try taking the battery off for ten minutes, reconnect and then try the recalibration procedure again :)

It might be going nuts because you've only calibrated it after driving it around for a week...

Well, tried the recalibration procedure as suggested by B34R. When I reconnected the battery, the window went down as expected, and that's where it stayed. The window would not even go up when the key is used in the tailgate door lock. Did the recalibration 3 times but still the window would not go up, only got 4 beeps when down button pressed. Gave up then drove to the local Landrover dealership where two mechanics had a look and neither could get the window to raise. Fuses checked ok, all the doors lock and interior lights all go out which shows that the CCU has confirmed that all the doors are closed.
Now booked in for a diagnostic check to find what error is being given.

I know it is not the window mechanism or motor as the window went up and down haphazardly before as shown in posts above. Only other thing it could be I suppose is the actual door lock on the tailgate, just hope it's not the CCU.

Had a diagnostic done yesterday. Seems that the control unit thinks the tailgate window is up even though it is down. Door lock and wiper motor reported working as they should. Bought a new window mechanism and motor, installed but as soon as the ignition was switched on, the window dropped again and refusing to raise. Tried a recalibration but still getting 4 beeps on the switch. Back at the garage today to get fixed, I have a suspicion that it is going to be the control unit that is at fault.

Found the fault, stripped away the side wall trim to follow the wiring harness and found two hidden relays, one for the rear wiper and one for the tailgate window. Swapped relays and the window works perfectly. New relay on order. Thanks for all those that offered suggestions they were a great help in pinning down the problem. Mechanic at IAWI 4x4 in Wellingborough eventually found the faulty relay and got the tailgate window working again.
With the wealth of knowledge available on this site, I am surprised none were aware of these hidden relays.
This forum is still a valuable source of information and I will continue to consult it.
