I tried to fix the small weep from the oil filter by removing it and reseating , the housing groove was clean and dry with a nice groove in the big seal where the oil filter casing was screwed up probably too tight , anyway I made the leak much worse, I’ve got a genuine filter coming, I’m tempted to to put some sealant on the seal , I assume the dirty oil is on the outside of filter element and clean on the inside? Just a bit worried if any sealant comes off ,
Any other tips to get it sealed first time cheers

A worthwhile modification is fitting a filter holder from a 2.5NA Diesel engine.

This is the same hole pattern as the Series engine, but takes the modern screw-on cartridge type filters.

I have one of these fitted to my Series 3 diesel. I am not sure if they also fit the petrol Series engines.

is this the same as a 200tdi one
I put new fillet and seal on , greased seal , turned canister while tightening up, manual says 12ft/lbs which i guessed as too low for my TW.
seemed ok ran for a day on short trip, jet washed it , topped up about a litre to bring to Normal , inspected looked ok parked on drive for 6 hours then reversed in behind gates and then seen the trail with a puddle when behind gates but not just sitting on drive without running, the bolt was noticeably slacker than when first tightened so hope its stopped!

From a google image search, it looks like it could be. I have never owned a Tdi so can't be certain on that.

I had a similar leak issue recently after changing an oil pressure switch on a non Land Rover vehicle. This was a tapered thread type where the thread taper forms the seal. I nipped the switch up what felt to be tight on the cold engine. Once started and warmed up properly, it started to drip. I nipped it up a little further with the engine warm. I had to do this two more times over the week until it stopped dripping. As the switch was screwed into an alloy housing, I was very careful with how much I tightened it as not to strip the threads.

Perhaps expansion/comtraction from the engine warming up and then cooling caused the bolt to loosen slightly?

I think you’re right, I changed oil and filter cold so was suspecting a Challenger type failure, possibly the rubber seal softened slightly when warm allowing tension off bolt , anyway nipped it up a bit more tested tonight looks ok , jetwashed the concrete to no avail , could be costly now missus wants one of them black concrete imprinted drives now

Those taper switches are pain, they don't fail by stripping, they eaither shear off in the block or crack the block. Triick is to clean the threads so there is a good contact and go in slowly.

I think the oil filter seal is now sorted it looks clean all round it, however oil still near fuel pump, i assume there must be some lubrication for the pump to work off the camshaft , would this oil be under pressure ? Could it be the pump gasket or can the oil work it’s way through the diesel lift pump itself and leak.?
From above the pump looks dry and no leaks from rocker cover.

Check your oil does not smell of diesel if lift pump diaphragm fails it will mix with oil and leak from a bleed hole in the pump but it will also get into the sump and thin your oil.

It might be an idea to spray water rinsable degreaser over the whole area. Leave it to soak for a few minutes, rub it in with a brush and hose it away.

Use a regular tap hose rather than a jet wash to avoid forcing water into anywhere you don't want it.

That way you will be able to see where the leak is coming from.

It looks like the gasket between the fuel pump and the block has failed, Take it off, clean the joint faces and threads, replace gasket then refit. Mine leaked and it was caused by the after market pump being slightly thinner than the orginal so the studs did not clamp it up enough, fixed with a couple of washers once i found it.

a new lift pump on and all was looking well getting on top of these leaks, however just back from a Skye and Highlands tour, A years mileage in one week!, 1100 miles and went through 4 litres of 20/50 and an amount of EP90 and after a 210mile last leg the land was dripping I Think from everywhere but the new fuel pump. Leaks from rocker cover, engine breather, sump area, gearbox’s, front n rear diff (new leaks), its quite comical looking at the oil everywhere, i. Noticed the engine breather leak on trip up and put some duck tape around the seal which stopped it I think perhaps this has caused overpressure elsewhere? On the positive side it didn’t let me down apart from a frayed stop cable that would not move the cut off lever, so had to stall it to stop it . There was smoke from the tailpipe with foot down may have been black smoke. the rear panel is coated with all the oil from underneath. Overdrive was quite noisy with a high pitched tone so may have a look at this year. The engine was getting hot just touching bottom of red at times and then would come back to normal? Took a big bag of tools and only needed 6” adjustable for the drain plugs.

2 weeks I hope you got your money back! , not too bothered about the leaks I’ll just keep plugging away at them , see how they do round the doors, I’m well happy with the high intensity rear lights when I was chugging away up hills on the dual carriageways cars and lorries pulling out to overtake way back.
