I've just done the head-gasket on 96 disco V8i filled up with water. It runs sweet the problem is its getting too hot. I had the water pump apart, the propeller is a bit rusty but still turns fine. Also Ive cleaned all the crap out of the radiator now when I took it for a run is started to get hot so I stopped and waited for it to cool down. I checked the radiator the top was hot and the bottom was cold. I had it off and run a hose though it and the water came out of the offer end so I don't think its blocked. I don't think its air-locked I filled it slowly and with a ramp under the wheel on that side. I'm at my wits end with this does any body have any ideas pls P.S. I have done a search aswel which left me mor confussed regards Steve

You have either got a stuck thermostat, or an air lock, or there is an air source in the engine causing an air lock, ie blown gasket. I presume that the water pump impeller and pulley are tight on the spindle?

I'd change the thermostat first or run without it and see if that cures the problem, then look at the other things.

Check also that you haven't go a collapsed hose, bit rare these days but it does happen.

if the rad core is blocked then you will still get water flow through it but not at a sufficient rate to cool the engine under load.. the only way to find out is to do a flow test but honestly the cost of a flow test is probably more than the cost of a fleabay rad.. have you thecked the stat??

I've taken the thermostat out and changed the water pump I'll just have to see how it goes I do have another radiator but the oil cooler is different so it ment draining both cars and putting a seperate oil cooler on. I still may have to do that but I'll wait and see.

The separate oil cooler is fitted on the other landy I have. The thing is that it actually belongs to the insurance company now so what ever bits I pinch, I have to put the old ones back on. I think I may do it any way cause I know that the other one is fine as its never let me down

Well I got 4mile then it started to get hot again so had to let it cool down and come back. The same again top of the radiator was hot and the bottom was cold. So I guess I'll have to change it anyhow. I'll let you know how I get on.

Well I looked into it further and cant swap the radiator with the other one as one is auto and one manual. So took if for a test and its 2/3 blocked so he's replacing the core. I did think of sourcing secondhand one but could have the same problem, this way I know its right.
