I have spent the last few years and 100k miles or so using the remains (3/4) of a 205l barrel of 15/40 semi synthetic diesel oil that I got from and old job. The new tucks (HGV) used a different oil so they no longer needed it and were going to throw it away!
I have now finished the barrel and need to buy some more engine oil but it has been a long time since I have looked at oil prices/specs/suppliers, etc. I have a disco 200tdi that gets serviced every 6k as the book suggests, this is usually every 6-14 weeks so I ideally want to buy in bulk, although do not want another full drum.

I have had a look at these: link1, link2
Does anyone who is more knowledgeable about the specs have any red flags for either of these or another suggestion for a good value, good quality, 20 liter supply.

Either of those would likely be fine as its not a fussy engine. I don't know if mineral is still preferred for these over semi, you could also look at farm supplies eg https://www.moleonline.com/m-prem-engine-oil-15w-40-25l
Cheers, I have been looking at agricultural suppliers but they all seem more expensive than the eBay ones. I have been using semi synthetic for years. I thought that was what was specified for them. I know the older ones are straight mineral oil.

Search for Mannol on ebay, decent pricea, every spec you can imagine.
You will need the acea code off your current barrel, but if its to old it may have been superceded.

Aim for about 3.50 gbp per litre in 20 litre drums.

Thank you, this is the sort of information I am looking for. I will have a look at the label on the barrel (still have it and is destined to be turned into a redneck smoker) and post up a pic of it to see if I can find the acea code.

l am going to stick my neck out and say that pretty much any quality branded engine oil will be alright in a 200tdi except the latest very light oils such as the 0w/20 recommended for our Jimny.

Carlube 15/40 mineral turbodiesel oil is fine.

Or whatever 15/40 mineral or semi synth turbodiesel oil you can get cheap.

SL Ci 4 seems ro cross over to E7 which is basically high quality truck engine oil, good for 50 to 100k between oil changes, slight overkill for cars!

As I said I got it free from work when the truck engines moved to the next generation and this became out of spec for the hgv fleet. Has done me about 100k at 6k change intervals. Maybe I should have left it in longer if it was that good an oil. But from the sounds of that I am not looking for the same again as it is overkill and likely to be very expensive.
