:eek::eek: Enjoy taking the **** :p:p:p:p:p:p

How do I check the oil levels in the gearbox and the other box (forgotten its name)

I am just checking the Landy over after the laning weekend. Done the oil, water, power steering fluid and given it a good wash. I know I have to check those bits underneath that you check with your finger and the bits you grease with a grease gun. going to try that later.

People at the weekend were talking about oil in the gearbox and other box and I am sure I have never checked these. I think I had better get the oil in those changed before its next trip, but in the meantime how do I know if there is any in them.

Thank you

No problem, nobody was born knowing where the plugs are.

You don't say which box you have , but both are similar ...

The drain plug is at the bottom on the right hand side.
The filler/level plug is about a third of the way up on the
right hand side. Make sure you can undo the filler first

WARNING!!! The fill/level plug is tapered and if it has been over-tightened in the past, can be a pig to remove.
Therefore, *make sure* you can get it out BEFORE you drain the oil.
Otherwise, you will have to turn the vehicle upside down to refill it.
This will spoil your day.

On the earlier LT77 box (reverse beside 1st) the filler has a regular
square head.
The later R380 (reverse opposite 5th) has a TorqX type plug and you will need to find a suitable tool to undo it.
You may need to use a long breaker bar to shift it if somebody's overcooked it.

Thank you, I dont know what box I have, its a 1991 200tdi. So do I have to go underneath it to find this filler plug or is under the bonnet. If I manage to undo it, how do I check the level of the oil in it  Thanks

When your sitting in the drivers seat -looking at the top of the gearstick...

Is reverse opposite 5th gear or up beside 1st ?

Checking levels ?
and this is the finger-sticky-inny bit - in the filler hole -

well, you should fill til the oil comes out, then put the plug back in ...

For both boxes (transfer box and gearbox) and diffs the oil should be level with the bottom edge of the filler hole. So just stick your finger in and make sure there's enough in it. If you need to top it up just keep filling it till it starts to run back out.

Filler plug for the transfer box will be on the back of it, to the left of the handbrake drum. Needs a 1/2 inch ratchet to undo if I recall correctly

:pound::pound: Sorry Sue, but I'm having a good chuckle with this thread, Not with your questions at all. But with the members who would jump out at a newbie for asking the same question:) and telling them to do a search:)

 They know that would be pointless with my questions :p

I do search, I just dont understand the answers I find  They are just not simple enough for me and assume I know where things are. Folks on here are used to that now :D:D:D:D:D

That is why I'm having a smile. Do not take it personnel or being mean. Hats off to you for doing your own maintenance. And asking :)

OK so from front to back the gearbox will be under the gear levers, then the transfer box ?? and then the handbrake drum.

If this is correct then I fill up with manual atf or similar in the front one and ep 80 or 90 in the one by the handbrake

Check color, if it looks like choc late milk not good, And as you are there you might want to extend the vents so water stays out when you go wadding

So what colour should it be ??? and is the manual atf different to the ep 80 or 90

No such animal as manual ATF, :) It is ATF used in a manual transmission
