Another Disco cold start problem

this was mine on a cold start once i got it started

after a few mins ran and started lovely, but would do the same again when cold. mine turned out to be piston rings and valves not shutting.

OK here is the plan of attack as I need to do things in order as when I get it started thats it until the next day to see if it cured it. (start on sat)

1, Pull all glow plugs out and check they heat OK and timer works fine.
2, Clean up all the earths and give it a quick turn over.
3, use a small amount of derv in a can to bypass the tank connectors. quick turn over
4, try and squeeze my new tractor battery into the space for a temp test.
5, come back on here and report back.

Remember when you test the glow plugs,it is the tip that needs to get cherry red ,when not right you find the shaft heats first-also tip should be cherry red in seconds

Thanks good tip, I may pull them out on Friday. I have found a supplier local to me with them in stock so if they are duff I can change them for around £40.

You can get cheap ones on ebay for around £10.00 a set of 4.
I use these and just change them as needed

ok here we go so far.

Timer works fine i loose about 1 volt from earth to glowplug. They glow OK in seconds but the new ones are not here yet. 2 of the glowplugs were sutty

Tomorrows job

OK and no problems.

4, try and squeeze my new tractor battery into the space for a temp test.
I am charging the battery now and will also jump it with the tractor battery to get extra cranking speed.

I have the same problem i figured it was the crappy battery as it starts fine on a jump

I have a month old Tractor battery which is huge and large CCA so will try that later today along with the new glow plugs if they turn up. The next thing today after I have put the new extractor fan up in the kitchen is to re earth everything. I know I am doing 2 things at once but I need it starting.

Well its not the battery or the earth. Earth is 1 ohm between battery and startermotor. Jump lead from earth to earth. so its def not that.

Glow plugs still to try and I have dumped some injector cleaner in it.

Any more suggestions.

Earth should be lower than 1 ohm,it should be as low as the meter will read with leads shorted together.
For starting with maybe 300 Amps flowing,I squared R ,would be very high if R=1 ohm.The leads would fry
R needs to be .01ohms or lower-presume your meter wont read that low

I will recheck later. I had one lead on the earth of the battery and one at the starter motor . I will recheck the meter.

RIGHT.....FIXED....I think.

I checked the old glow plugs and they seemed to work OK but I put new ones in anyway. Last night I got the engine warm and then filled the fuel filter with seafoam. loads of smoke later it seemed to run smother.

This morning it started straight away with 2" snow on the bonnet.
I will leave it a couple of days and try again. Just need to sort out the flippin TPS and I have a nice Landy

I am not sure if seafoam is snake oil or not but hay it started.

OK its cold outside and the Disco has been left all week. It started yesterday straight away. I also had a TPS problem which got sorted, see my other post.

OK I am back,
The pump timing was out very slightly however when I go back to it now its like the battery is dead but its not so I am now assuming the starter is on its last legs. My telehandler had exactly the same fault , i replaced the starter and its never missed a start since. I have two options replace with a standard one or get one of the wosp ones as I said earlier in the year. Any comments??
