.... but I have done most of the things that search throws up.

Car: P38 2.5DT

Symptoms: engine cranks over fine, seems to catch but will not quite start and run. Some smoke from exhaust during the cranking procedure.

Now, I have:

- but a new battery in, highest rating that will fit (830A)
- tested the fuel lift pump using the L/R bulletin procedure. Plenty of fuel in container after 10 seconds
- changed the leak off pipes. I thought these could be the problem, they were hard and brittle and I could see liquid in no.1 injector well. However, changing them appears to have made no difference. And I am now fairly certain the liquid is oil spilt during topping up! Doh.
- tested battery voltage during cranking again as per L/R bulleting (fine - over 10V)
- tested voltage at glowplugs. Seems OK, at around 11V, which suggests that there is a significant current draw through them as well

I am now thinking it could be one of two things:

1) system needs bleading out
2) glowplugs not working, or working poorly

Re. (1) I have noticed that there is still air in the clear pipe, which moves towards the FIP when the lift pump starts, but comes back when the lift pump stops. Do I need to bleed the system somehow? Also, if it is a lack of fuel problem, how come I get smoke from exhaust during cranking?? I have looked in RAVE for a bleeding procedure but cannot find one. Anybody know??? Should the system self-bleed? It is worth noting that the fuel pump test will of course allow quite a bit of air into the system...

I know lots of you have been through at least some of the above steps, so any help/advice would be gratefully received - and if I have missed something on search - sorry!!

Cheers

Jerry

Spotted in RAVE that you need to crack open the connection on the inlet to the FIP to blead the system when you change the fuel filter, so I tried that - made no difference at all, but at least the air in the clear pipe has now gone!

Tried cracking open the connections to a couple of injectors too, def fuel getting through.

So I have ordered some new glowplugs (Delphi). Hopefully that will sort it, otherwise I am running out of ideas!!

Cheers,

Jerry

Just for the record, it was -10degC this morning, the glowplug light came on for about 5 secs only, and the car started straight away - a good cold start test I think! :)
