My 99T TD5 is a bit sick, just now.
(Bought last May, I've had 30000 pretty much trouble free miles - and loads of fun.:))
So I'm looking for advice on whether to get all the work now required done, or sell for what I can and move on.

The issue started with an occasional rise in temp. and loss in power, which has turned into temp warning light on, but needle pointing down as soon as you start, and it sounding very rough at low revs.

My garage has diagnosed a Cylinder head gasket, but can't tell exactly what needs done, until they get it apart. Estimated cost £900+VAT with no guarantee that it can be fixed until they get it apart.

In addition I need one new suspension airbag thing, which they are quoting at £285 from landrover plus £150 to fit. (I'm sure I can get that part cheaper).

So all in I am looking at £1400 ish on a car I spent £1200 on for loads of stuff in Jan this year.

So do I?
a. pay for the work and cross my fingers I'll get a few more miles out of her
b. try to sell in current condition. I'm thinking that similar vehicles in good running order go for £3000. Would someone willing to do the work themselves give me £1500? The money would just go towards another disco.

your opinions please...

You’re not going to get much for it with a blown head gasket, to sell it you’ve got to fix it, or scrap it.
You’re getting ripped off for the airbag, Paddocks do them for around £90 & my Granny could fit it in 20 mins.

depends on if you would want to keep it for a long time? do you like the spec of the car? is the body work good? if you are just going to replace with another one , may aswell get work done if the car is in good nick , as you may buy another one for £3k 6months down the line same problem, all depends on your plans mate

Whats wrong with the wealth of information on here then..?

Why not try another garage or two for second opinion, definately being stuffed on the airbag. Like bencorkill said, depends on condition and if you like it or not, if so get work done and keep it.

Before you get any work done, have a look yourself! Check the radiator isn't blocked, that the fan is running properly, that the air filter and whole air system is working properly, take all the air pipes off completely and check there aren't any small rodents blocking them ;)

Airbags can be relatively easily changed and don't cost anywhere near that, indeed you could do the whole lot yourself for less, not just one!

Have a search on this forum, there is a real wealth of knowledge and 'outside the box' thinking available here. These questions come up pretty regularly and there's a lot you can do to mitigate costs, even if you're a complete numpty with tools.

Put your location in the relevant UserCP part, there may well be someone reasonably close who can and will help you ....

Could,nt have put it better myself !.

Discovery2 ownership can be VERY expensive if you have to rely on expensive garages to do any work for you.

I,m no " mechanic ", but, changing the head gasket and air bags would,nt cost me any more than £200 or £300.

Its garages and main dealers charging these kind of rates that gives maintaining a Discovery2 a bad name.

Cheers.
