My 300tdi has developed a really annoying knock/tap from the top end. It's seems to be from the fuel pump area. There doesn't seem to be any difference in performance and only does it on idle. I've cracked the injectors off and it does make a slight difference. When I did this there didn't seem to be the same amount of fuel coming out of the second injector. I'm pretty certain it's either injectors or fuel pump timing but can't find the thread on how to retime it. Any suggestions? Cheers

If your lift pump is failing then the injector pump has to do more work to suck fuel through and it won't be as lubricated from excess fuel. This can cause the injector pump to tap.

How many miles has your engine done and have you ever changed the lift pump?

Is there any way of checking the lift pump? I've taken the top off and cleaned the crap out. Not sure how old it is though as it was on the car when I bought it. I've put a new fuel filter on it. Think I'll change the lift pump see if it improves at all.

Also clean the crap from the sedimentor, if you still have one ... (off-side rear wheel arch, inboard of chassis) ...
Make sure you have a carrier bag ... nasty thing live in 'em ... erghh

Thanks for that. I had a half arsed go at getting it off the other night but gave up. The 11mm bolt on the top didn't seem to want to undo
