Hi Peeps,

While out laning with DiscoDad the other week, he mentioned that another landyzone member had some software on his iPaq (I have spelt that correctly - HP iPaq), that plots a route you take - handy for storing routes for greenlaning etc.

Well, today I stumbled across this little app for Android phones that does the same thing (integrates with Google Maps). I've not had a chance to play with it yet, but will do shortly, and thought you might like to try it too! It plots and stores routes, as well as giving you all sorts of data (designed for walking, running, cycling etc.). You can export data in various formats and also share them on Twitter or Facebook. :eek:

It's completely FREE :D and is available on the Android Market Place (search for "My Tracks"), so use the QR image below to go to the app.

think i'll stick to memory maps on my Ipaq...lol it was me that nick was talking about, it works off the OS maping using memory maps veiwer.

MM is probably the better one to go for; I agree.

If I get more into the green laning side of things, it might be something I get but my priority for navigation is a posh GPS for if we go to Morocco.

Hey Stu - Yeah, fair enough to those who have an iPaq, complete with GPS and the software (I got the iPaq!! :D ), but this is completely free and people are more likely to have the hardware (any Android phone). It works really well too! :)

Below, I have some screenshots from my HTC desire, showing the info this app stores. I just did a run from one of my clients (main roads - from the max speed, you can tell I wasn't in my Disco!!). It's quick and easy to use. Turn on GPS, start recording with a single screen tap, drive, tap to finish recording. You can then store it for use later - you can give it a name and description. You can flick between the pages shown below - map route, altitude/speed, and journey stats.

You can share your data with others in different formats.

With Memory Map, the viewer is free, the maps can be down loaded from torent, then you just get the GPS and the 3rd Party Mapping liecence which in all cost about £20 to £25 if i remember right, and you got MM's on your Ipaq for just a few sheckles, and its using OS maps. so it's just like having a real map.

Trouble is that the route mapping system your using only gives you a route on road, or can you gett the benefit of the green lanes/off road on them, if the green lanes are not on there, then more or less all you have is a TomTom with a couple of additions,

It depends what you want from your mapping system , think I would rather have something that does the job properly rather then plays at it, also what happens if you have lost the rest of you party and need to locate them while using the phone, (cause they are out of radio comm's) and the mapping system at the same time. I have been in this postion before. - (Yes you can use the back up paper maps).

Horses for courses, it just depends what you want..... and what you need to get out of it...

Thanks for the post, looks very useful and a good little write up. Definitely making note of this one.

Incidentally you pretty much drove right past my parents house too! Nice area, suspect there's some great laning to be had round there.
 
Google tracks? I use it for running over malvern hills. Very accurate. Imagine good for green laning. My sony ericsson also nails battery power. Bought a double size battery. Also plug phone in when i use sat nav

hey just Tried this on my phone,

its ok but seems that bits of the route are mised for some reason, on the same jouney into work it seems to lose signal at the same spots, I dont know if you have to be connected in any way to the internet for this to work, or the GPS is does not work so well on my phone in these areas, I would of thought that the GPS signal would mor or less stay the same , I work in the countryside so it cant be buildings, the same route I have covered with my Ipaq and no problems, has anyone else found the same.

I must say it does eat the power, and its pain when you get a call in, I have got a Parrot Bluetooth system, and you do lose the prog when the phone rings.

What I do like about it is you do get the statilite veiw from google maps.

Think I will be sticking to the Memory Maps....
 
if you've got Memory Map on your computer, there is an android app called MM tracker that's free which will put a Memory Map reader on your phone, but you do need to have the maps on a memory card for it to work
