Since i bought my motor a few weeks ago i have found it gets hot at anything over 50 mph as in right near the end of the gauge, it has a non standard temp gauge. After checking everything i could without stripping ie top and bottom hoses getting hot, rad getting evenly warm i thought I would remove the grill and give it a blast through with the pressure washer, bloody hell i couldn't believe the amount of sand and mud that came out.
This is what came out after the second go

Question is it now runs cooler but is it enough, this is where it runs now or just above 82 degrees, it rises to about half way between 82 and 116 at speed (60-65) which equates to roughly 100c

It was a bit of a **** or bust attempt as the next step would have been to pull the rad and send it for a flow test etc

Pressure washing ok if done with care[not to close with jet and straight on] on a good condition rad.Are the fin's between the tubes all there? If not it will not cool well. Check the thermostat it may not be working properly.

The rad is in very good condition externally not rotten at all, there were a few flattened ones but spent an hour carefully straightening them. With engine running i can put a piece of paper anywhere on the front of the rad and it stays there, not exactly scientific but proves air is flowing

IR themometer might be of use.
82 sounds cool to me, stats open at 88, mine gets up to 95 on a under load run, ie doing 60 towing the caravan, but never solo.

It may well have an 82fitted. I have an 88 in mine and it run's just above unless working hard [towing] have electric fan set to go at 95.

We have an ir thermometer at work so will have to try that, i suppose the thermostat housing would be the best place for a reading

Temp about 90C by looks of it so all would seem normal, I would fit a standard temp gauge to give a quick visual warning should things get too hot. IMO the gauge you have does not really do this due to the scale of the gauge.

Pressure washing it is a silly thing to do,

Better to take it out an soak it,

Or use a hose pipe at very low pressure

I do it all the time at work with an industrial steam cleaner, the advise given ref aim at rad dead straight and some distance away is spot on, as soon as you deviate away from straight the fins collapse!
I would say 100 is a bit to hot for comfort but I dont actually have any experience of the 19j myself so its maybe they all do that sir?

19j's do run hot,no intercooler[a good mod] and need cooling system to be top condition.

Glad you mentioned an intercooler as I have been reading a lot of conflicting reports, is it worth doing for engine longevity as I'm more than happy with the power so just looking to preserve the engine
