Am I mad?

Yes, you're mad. Brave, but mad. You have my greatest respect. You should have AA/RAC recovery, though. Just in case......

Almost, my '73 SIII is my daily driver and only vehicle, I do have an overdrive though! I live in a flat and have to do all my repair work in the road if that helps!

I keep meaning to buy a 'sensible car' as well, never seems to happen though.

Keep meaning to get another car but can't face the insurance and road tax on a newer car. The landy is £120 a year for insurance and no tax but the 40 mph is a bit taxing though. Have seen fairey overdrives on ebay but what are the chances of getting a sound one?

two series landys here, both are my daily drivers although one is pretty and the other is my general beater, both 200tdi'd as i couldn't face the fuel bill

If you tune it properly you should get mid to high 20's mpg from a 2 1/4 lump, and if everything else is sound, a steady 75-80mph is also easily achieveable!

Don't like to go much above 50 as it is definatly not comfortable. I would assume this is a gearing issue as opposed to tuning. Used to have a k reg petrol and that was also comfortable at about 50. Not sure mid to high 20's mpg is achievable unless you knock it out of gear and coast down a hill. I maybe wrong though.

no mid 20s are definatly achievable with a 2.25 petrol, i got 24 mpg from kent to the Bieszczady mountains of poland which is over 1300 miles and my navigator insisted we go the wrong way up and down the bloody hills of germany so we came in at the bottom of poland and i was loaded up to the gunnels

I'm thinking of going to Europe with my 2 1/4 petrol next summer but really need to work out the mpg I'm getting. I was expecting 12mpg, not mid to high 20s! Also I'm not sure how I can work it out. I can't really fill the tank because then it leaks out...

My s3 is my only motor, and no overdrive. Hate driving normal cars.

How on earth do you get that sort of mpg? If this is Evan nearly achievable I got some work to do.
75-80 mph:eek: really don't know what would escape first diff, gearbox or pistons.

trust me it is definatly achievable i had no overdrive and was off the clock on a polish fresh laid motorway with no weight in my 2a and was running late for my mates wedding and made the time up sat nav said 78 when iwas crusing and i was getting 25 mpg pretty good and crusing at 50/ 55 i can get 28 but i have adjusted my jets so it runs really really sweet and fitted a big bore stainless steel exhaust and a KnN filter so it is a bit more perky or at least sounds it haha

75-80mph and mid to high 20s

you're probably the only person on this planet that achieves that with a 2.25 petrol

most folks i speak to are chuffed to bits with 21-22mpg travelling at 50-55mph

i only get 36mpg out of my bitsa (88") when sat at 50-55mph, this is with 7.50 tyres, 3.54 diffs, an overdrive and a 200tdi under the bonnet

my 109 only does 29mpg at 50-55mph with tdi, 3.54 diffs, 7.50 tyres and NO overdrive, stick my caravan behind it and i can easily get back to low 20s if i try to maintain more than 55mph

its all about how well set up your engine is and i spent a lot of time getting it just right back a long time ago i got told the same thing and said naa but proof of the pudding was driving out to poland in convoy with a lightweight 2.25 petrol but tuned to perfection the old boy really knew his stuff and he got 28 mpg crusing at 55 mph and he could pick up speed and have it drop down to 25 crusing with 110 v8s at 70 75 mph, the old boy helped me get mine just right and it really is true but you do need a light foot towing mine drops like a stone anything over a ton and im lucky to get 20

could that be because the petrol in poland is better than ours, back in the day when we all used 4 star i used to get around 24ish but i think its unhered of with unleaded.

on unleaded i had a brand new recon'd 2.25 petrol engine inc an unleaded head, recon'd gearbox, recon'd axles, new carbs ( zenith and weber ) new dizzy, new ( od ), fwh's and 7.50's, all on a s11a swb and at best still only got between 16-18 mpg hence why i ended up converting to tdi 32 mpg around town, 38 mpg on a long run.

so don't think it can be done now with unleaded, but leaded yes it can be acheived.

i got a petrol series 3 the speedo dont work so i dont no the mpg i get but would love to get more than 20 i just seem to be watching the petrol guage at mo, would love to go 200tdi but will have to wait till i sell me motorbike
