Am I being paranoid

I own a Discovery 2. Do you blame me?!?!? But.....

It's my first Disco and I'm still learning how it drives and as I don't have anything to compare to I worry about stuff. It's an auto, and it seems that it hangs onto the gears a bit too long. I've checked my XYZ switch and it's dry as a bone and in good nik. It does also seem a bit underpowered compared to my mates manual Td5. Are they just like that, or am I just being paranoid?

Thoughts and suggestions please......

Are you expecting a racing car, cos that it aint.

Before I had my manual remapped it was slug slow, now its fast, might be worth finding someone with an auto and having a drag race

As @neilly said, F1 it ain't. I've often said that you've got to remember too that you're driving a 2 1/4 ton steel box with all the aerodynamics of a house brick.
A proper remap done by someone like Mike from Dynachip who really knows his stuff particularly on the Disco 2 will probably help. Don't get misled into fitting one of those "go fasta" clip on boxes. The only thing they'll increase the speed of is money leaving your bank account.

Hi RangerSi, just over a year ago I was in the same position as you. After a gearbox oil change, and a remap from the above-mentioned Mike at Dynachip, it's like a different car, and quieter too. Highly recommended.

Not that we know of. My friends feels like I would expect it to feel. If that makes sense?

I know what you are saying, in the respect that mine did not feel how I expected it should, in some ways my old 300tdi fender felt like it had more go than the D2. When I had it remapped by Mike, the D2 felt and drove I expected it should have done when it left the factory.

Ive spun wheels in second gear and it gives me the 'puts you in your seat' feel about 200 revs earlier than it should, its quicker than my previous fiesta Zetec-s , so I would definitely say you would feel it!
This is all mikes work at dynachip too, I'll try put up a pic of his flyer in case you're interested, plus an egr delete and decat, but sorry don't have anything for you on the gears! Maybe the gears are due to the power though, even servicing mine, and using Forte diesel system cleaner made a massive difference to power and smoothness

It is amazing what a difference the remap makes, just a shame it did not come like it.

Buy a new Siemens maf... Remove map sensor from inlet and clean with carb cleaner... Unplug throttle switch and clean... If you have a 15p td5 remove the cat... It will still pass Mot fine but gives you an extra boost

While you're doing the oil change, drop the sump and replace the internal filter as well as shown in the link Neilly posted. Doesn't take long and worth it to see what's the condition is like inside. It's not a sports car but they can cover the ground quite quickly for the size and age of them.

The Td5 Auto's are a little different to a manual Td5. As already suggested an oil and filter change on the gear box and fresh oil might make a difference if you don't know when it was last changed. A few mods like the cat and egr delete will help a good quality re map would also help with the feel and drivability of the disco.

I've already done the EGR and there's no cat on my one either, though I do need a new down pipe. The flexi part has had it on mine. My MAP sensor is clean as a whistle, but I'll see about a new MAF and I'll look at the throttle switch.

I'll look into changing the gearbox oil and the sump filter as suggested.

I would plug it into diagnostics first read the live data on the maf sensor to make sure it's working before replacing it.
