Series 2 Alternator.

Thought I would fire engine up again today just to check if it was still ok. rigged up to battery with wires and fuel pipe in can of petrol ect.
Not got a clue what sounds good or bad but think it sounds ok.
Anyway alternator is not wired yet but is there any way I can check if it is working and also the water pump ?

Doesn't sound too bad to me though the timing might be a bit off.
The water pump should be nice and tight, movement at the fan when belt is off will tell you that. With the radiator cap off and the engine running, you should see the coolant being stirred around more so if you blip the throttle.
As for the alternator, you should see at least 13.8 v with it running and connected to the battery

Thanks. Should fan spin when belt is off ? Alt not wired yet, is there a way to temperaley wire it to battery ?

Yes the fan should spin easily.
I'm not sure which wires are used in your alt

Thanks Again sorry for been an Idiot, but when engine running and belt off should the fan spin with engine ? I can spin it freely by hand with engine off.

Fan is only turned by the belt. Yes you can spin by hand with engine running or off. It spins the water pump

Will run it for a bit with belt on and cap off rad . should all pipes get hot top and bottom ?

Yes it should and you should see the coolant swirling around

Until the thermostat opens no water should flow through the rad. Yes you can run without the cap on. Once stat opens you will see the movement.

as for alternator 2 large spades to battery & light onto the small spade. Unsure if the alternator small spade is live…check this & if it is connect 1 cable to it from the bulb & the other to earth. This will activate the charge side.
Only check the alternator small spade once the large cables are connected to the battery

Picture of the top hose will show me what set up you have for the heater. Have you plumbed the heater in?

Yes smiths heater plumbed in has a tap on top of engine.but nothing wired up yet,

You have 1 pipe connected above the thermostat, is the other pipe on the rear of the engine?

And connect the other to the tap on the rear of the engine. Make sure the tap opens and allows flow of water. You can close these off in the summer to prevent the heater from working , but I would leave open so the heater don’t block up

Yes got tap connected, water seems to be moving around now, forgot I had new thermostat so put that in to. does it look to be working ? Not very good with electrics, but will try and have a go at the alt
