Got a 200tdi defender 90. Had my belt snap not long ago changed it, now my alternator seems to have packed up. this a coincidence or are they related??

Wouldn't have thought the belt snapping could damaged an alternator, unless parts of the belt went into the alternator, or possibly the snapped belt wrapped around the fan and buggered it up?

gunna be a strange coincident then! thanks

No problem :D

Looking at the amount of lights you have, did you have a high output unit before? Just got a 65amp one and wondering if you found it ok? :D

To be honest i dont no wat the existing one was. didnt seem to have an issue. but have been having starter probs since i bought it. but the alternator has only just given up!! im on an ongoing battle! but am looking at a 65amp one to go in. been reading posts on here and herd of ppl running a split charge off a 65 amp with no probs.

Yeah was thinking of doing similar, I'm getting a winch soon, so I'll do a split charge system and try and fit a battery under the centre seat (cubby box on mine) and use that for auxillary lights and the winch :D

Thats wat i will be doing when i can start spending money on extras rather than necessary components!!! :D let me know how it goes!!

Doing a quick calc based on typical wattages I would say you are running about a 30amp load of lighting. Thats nearly half the load of the alternator, plus battery recharge current which on a cold start could be significant, plus any other electrical loads. I would not be happy knowing my alternator was running at over 50% load whenever I have the lights on.

I know you will not be driving with that set of electrical conditions all the time but they are not ideal. A Disco runs a 100amp alternator as standard and that is because of the heavier electrical load, it would work find on a 65amp but LR know it's life will be significantly shorter. If you can stretch the pennies a little I would suggest a 100amp unit.

Thnx i will have a look about! good to know someone's good with the calculations!

Is it possible the alternator seized and snapped the fan belt ? Had you got the extra lights switched on when it snapped?

I upgraded mine to 85amps, was told not to go more with a tdi v belt,I used a mini alternator and with all my lights on the voltage drops just below 14 volts, got it from eBay for about £65

I have a 100 amp alternator, a 12000lbs winch and two batteries in parallel. No problem with 100 amp on the standard belt set up on defender 300 tdi. Have had issues with alarm flattening batteries but alternator has charged back up with no belt slip problem. With two flat 110amp hour batteries the alternator will be pulling some serious amps but still all is ok.
