Hoping someone can give me some info on alternator wiring. I had the alternator in my series 3 replaced with an 80 amp Mitsubishi alternator. It works fine but I want to rewire the whole car as it is really untidy.

I am wondering if I need the voltage regulator or does the alternator have an internal regulator.
The alternator has an output terminal and a 4 pin socket of which 3 pins are currently used, F,E and N.

The regulator is not original. It has a 6 pin connector

Tried that but they're more into nitrous and car audio so not real up on stuff like this.

I,m sure its a pretty standard setup as the Lucas alternator that was on before had the same connector. I was hoping an auto elec would know as they don't exist in Indonesia (auto elecs).
 
WE can be sure enough of two things:

1. the Mitsubishi alternator has an internal voltage regulator - all modern automotive alternators do (OK, so someone will find an exception .... )

2. the regulator thing you have probably doesn't do anything that is to do with the alternator.

I'm sure you're right CharlesY. I guess I could just wire it up as per the current set up but remove the external regulator and see what happens.

As long as I monitor the charge voltage on startup it shouldn't cause any problems. Just have to shut it down and wire in the reg if it goes to high voltage.

Sure, but is that regulator wired in to the system right now?
If it is, does the alternator depend on it? That would be VERY unusual.

You could hunt for wiring diagrams for slitty cars that used this type of alternator, and see if the regulator is external.

Take care else the alternator may do one of two things:
NOTHING,
or disappear in a cloud of smoke and flames!

I have the old loom which I have torn out. I can untape it and try to work out where the wires run to.

I think maybe the last alternator was wired in without removing the external regulator, or maybe because the internal one had failed. that would be a typically Indonesian solution rather than repair it.

Problem is I have no idea what it came of, or even if it was a Mitsu vehicle. Maybe Mitsu Electrical supply for other vehicles.

That my man is the million rupiah question (literally, =US$110 which is what a replacement will cost me)

I hope by stripping the old loom I might shed some light on the pin designation. I am guessing Exciter, sense and indicator light connections but am not yet sure which is which.

Not an ideal situation.:D:D
If the voltage overshoots hopefully I can shut it down before it comes to smoke and flames.

Wish I had my local auto elec from back in NZ to point me in the right direction. It's been over 20 years since I did any serious rewiring and the old memory isn't what it used to be.
