Another quick question.

I am in the middle of putting back together a 1994 Defender 90 300 tdi.

Unfortunately when I bought it the engine was on the floor next to it, the dash and front panel assembly was in bits and most of it was chucked in the back. But for what I paid it is worth fixing up.

Now the engine is back in I cant figure out the alternator wiring. The battery live reaches the starter motor, and there appears to be a thick brown from the bulkhead fusebox next to the heater, which also reaches the sterter motor, but not the alternator. Thats it apart from a couple of dirty thick(ish) cables that look like earths coming out of the main loom by the gearbox bellhousing, they do look brown though which may make them a power feed for something.

From looking through the search posts on here, and also the various wiring diagrams, the alternator is wired through to the battery live via the starter motor. Is this a seperate wire that links the two that I may be missing, or a part of the loom I have missed when trying to match it up.

Cheers

You also have 2 other wires running through the loom to the alternator:
Brown/yellow: charge/no charge light which goes on a post (ring terminal)
White : should have female terminal to go on male terminal

Ok that makes it simpler, I have found the other wires.

Well I think I have as its up at my folks house 45min drive away as its too tall to fit in my garage:( for now.

Does the other alternator wire feed round from the drivers side over the front of the engine? if so it sounds right.

Great help thanks.

Yep the alternator wires feed round past the lift pump and through over the belt tensioner to the alternator, in that loom you will also have the wire for your oil press switch and temp gauge sender and fuel pump stop solenoid ;)
