Alternator sounds like a bag of bolts....

At least i hope its the alternator! It seems to be coming from behind the black plastic cover at the back of the alternator. No problems with anything in the car at all. Its almost silent on idle, but when you rev it, it sounds like shaking a bag of bolts. Sound-proofing round the bonnet is great though cos you cant hear it when the bonnet is closed at all. I only heard it last week when i finally got round to flushing the cooling system and renewing all the coolant.

If its not the alternator i think i'll drive it into a river...

just take the drive belt of and rev the engine if no noise it's the alternator,if it's still there look further.

it sounds like the bearings have collapsed in the alt but as suggested by Gemsdad take the belt off and see if all goes quiet.
