Hi, I am hoping that someone can help me with resolving an Electrical problem with my 2000 P38 Vogue. I bought the car in March of this year with 50k Miles on the clock. I bought the car in the hope that it will cope with the Ukrainian roads which are very much like moon scape's.

However, whilst driving here in March the Rev Counter started fluctuating between 3500 and zero. I was informed by Land Rover that it was a failed Alternator or Voltage regulator (I know that the VR is inside the Alternator), so I promptly bout a new replacement in Germany and had it fitted. Everything seemed ok for a while.

Then it developed an AC system failure which following the guidance of our Ukrainian Land Rover Experts required a new Condenser which was duly fitted but did not fix the problem. Struggling through with no AC and temperatures of around 30 degrees I set of for a trip to UK.

On the way I noticed that the problem with the Rev Counter had returned, so on arriving in the UK I went to a local Land Rover specialist who said that the AC problem was the Air Mix sensor under the clock on the dash and that the Alternator had failed. I explained that the Alternator was new, but he just said that I was very unlucky so he changed both.

I drove back to Ukraine happy that all was well. This was the end of July. In August the Rev Counter and the AC started to fail yet again. I have also detected a vibration (similar to wheel balance problem or misfire on one cylinder), whilst driving. This could have been there for a long while without my noticing, remember the moon scape like roads.

Now, I need someone to tell me if I am just the most unlucky person in respect of Alternators, if these problems could be related or have I got three separate faults? Has anyone else experienced such problems?

Thanks in advance

Dave

Doesn't sem right to me either (or my wallet). I am told that it is the VR, but I am no longer sure that anybody actually checked this out.

when i had my 88 classic, i was on holiday in the new forest, tacho stopped working, another holiday maker knew of a place nearby that did reconditioned alternators, he took me down there, got it fitted it, everthing worked for a day then tacho failed again, went back to recon place, they changed the alternator, i then came home, on the way home, it went again, i took it to hickleys nearby and they found out that the recon place was using too low temperature solder. hickleys fixed it and it lasted for the next 5 years
