1994 300tdi does anyone know how many amps my alternator is producing or where I might find the information ?

Thanks

Lee

It produces AMPS of power as a measure of its output.

The output varies to match the LOAD, so if the battery is well charged, and you have more or less nothing leccy turned on, the 'nator will be doing damn-all.

It's maximum output is likely to be somewhere around 700 to 1000 watts, say 60 to 90 amps.

That is a hefty current, needing the second fattest cable in the car.

If it helps I replace the 65 amp v belt driven alternator on my 200 tdi for a 93 300 tdi v ribbed driven type, apparently the 393 - 96 300 tdi alternator is 100 amps. I swapped the pulleys and made a small adjustment to the tensioner braket and its a bolt swap.

i've been wanting to do this fer a while - so does the standard v pulley fit the 300 alternator without any boring or bushing ? and is it an arse to get off ?

It probably does, but check with someone who has done it.

A 65 amp alternator may be marginal in winter conditions especially, and it may be struggling to keep on top of current draw (lights, heater, demister, wipers, heated seats, and so on) AND hold up at least 13.8 volts at the same time so the battery stays fully charged for the next cold start.

The 100 amp alternator would do all that easily. Go for it.

Hi sorry for the delay in replying. I posted the conversion a few months back but it is very straightforward. The new 100 amp unit should bolt in place of your old 65 amp one. The pulleys do swap but you will need to juggle the spacers from the two alternators to centralise the drive pulley. The adjuster bracket had to be spaced with 3 washers. The wiring is also straightforward, the heavy brown wire goes to the top connector at the back of the alternator and then directly to the battery, the next connector down goes to the thin brown wire which is for the dashboard charge light, this only leaves the thin white wire to go to the remaining terminal (fit a spade) this wire powers the rev counter.

As always please note my vehicle is a SPANISH spec 200 tdi LHD so cross ref with a wiring diagram for your car if you are not sure, too date there has not been any problems whatsoever (he says typing with fingers crossed).
The alternat
or charges two optima yellow batteries via a 100 amp split charge relay, the main battery does the normal stuff of running the car, the aux battery runs the winch, the long weekend at the beach fridge and the cooling fan which can run when the engine is off. I plan to wire the interior lights and radio/CD to the aux battery.
Hope this helps and feel free to shout if I can help at a later date.
regards
Dave
