Hiya,

on Saturday, when I was on the motorway with 150/160km/h or so (Germany) :) the light of the alternator turned on. I braked down immediately and the light turned off. Fortunately I was on my to the garage and the guy measured the amps of the battery while engine running with light and so on and 13.08A. He said he gives me ~5k km till it'll die completely. I thought about buying a new one and had a look on island 4x4. They have one for 150+ with 150A from Lucas. On ebay I found some for ~100£ new as well but no brand.

Do you have suggestions which one to go for as I didn't want to spend 368£ for LR one or would it be better just to go and let it refurbish?

Kind Regards
Matthias

No one anything on it? I called eurocarparts to ask and when I gave them the original number yle000070 I got one back with pulley of 53mm and when I called again and gave them yle501170 which shall be the new one I got one with 50mm, but the 2nd shall be the new number from LR for it. My chassis starts with 12A3... So it should be the right one as far as I can see on island-4x4

I would go for a refurbish first. If it turns out to be the brushes that are worn or the diode/regulator pack, this will be a lot cheaper fix than buying new. If the repair shop finds that it is beyond repair, you will have to by either a new or exchange rebuilt unit anyway. At least you will have covered all your options.

A lot of years ago we had a guy who would test and fix alternators while you waited. To buy one from a motor factors was (then) about £30-50, he would give your own one back for a max of £10. I watched him one day and to replace packs and bearings was so simple. Sadly he died a few years ago and no one had the sense to take his place.
